SUMMARY:The Politics of Performance: Akbar and Images of Sun Veneration
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 23\n10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.\nMuseum Boardroom \nThough Mughal emperor Akbar remained a Sunni Muslim\, he borrowed from various religious traditions as a means of appealing to the spiritually diverse populace over which he ruled. Akbar’s commission of multiple portraits of himself in the act of sun veneration speaks to his personal investment in this performance of religious tolerance. Situating this group of portraits within the cultural and political climate of the day\, this talk by Dr. Krista Gulbransen\, assistant professor at Whitman College\, explores Akbar’s motivations and the role these portraits played in the construction of his public persona and legacy. \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council (SAAC) \nFree SAAC Members | $10 Museum members | $15 nonmembers | $5 students
