SUMMARY:The Great Mysore Bhagavata in the Edwin 3rd Binney Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Royal India Banquet Hall\, 8990 Miramar Rd #200\, San Diego\, CA 92126 \n  \nOne of the gems in the Edwin Binney 3rd collection at the San Diego Museum of Art is the Bhāgavata Purāna (Ancient Stories of the Lord)\, referred to as the Mysore Manuscript\, dated around 1825. The Great Mysore Bhāgavata – is a recent publication by the renowned scholar Dr. B N Goswamy which is a complete study of the Mysore Manuscripts of nearly 200 illustrations. Join us for a lecture/ presentation by Dr. B N Goswamy to commemorate this occasion . This event will be at The Royal India restaurant – the lecture will be followed by lunch. He is the recipient of many honours\, including the Padma Shri (1998) and the Padma Bhushan (2008) from the President of India. Professor Goswamy has taught at many universities across the world. He has published extensively. Apart from the San Diego Museum’s own publication\,Domains of Wonder (with Caron Smith\, 2005)\, his recent book\, The Spirit of Indian Painting: Close Encounters with 101 Great Works\, has been hailed by William Dalrymple as ‘An out-and-out masterpiece …will undoubtedly come to be looked on as one of the greatest books ever written on Indian art.’

These unique water-harvesting structures—marvels of architecture\, engineering\, and art—proliferated throughout the subcontinent for over a millennium\, but eventually faded into oblivion by the 19th century. In this lecture\, Lautman will trace the fascinating history\, variety\, and current state of India’s least-known edifices.
