DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 3\n10:30 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Annie Buckley\, Director\, San Diego State University School of Art + Design and Founder and Director\, Prison Arts Collective \n  \nJoin the Arts Education Council for a discussion with Annie Buckley as she gives an insider’s perspective of San Diego State University’s School of Art + Design. She will discuss art trends\, teaching virtually\, today’s art student in an urban environment\, and outreach in the community. \nMs. Buckley is an artist\, writer\, and educator with an emphasis on art and social justice. She is an award-winning professor and the director of the School of Art + Design at San Diego State University. Her photo-collage and participatory art has been included in museum and gallery exhibitions\, and her writing about contemporary art is published widely\, including in Artforum International Magazine\, Art in America\, The Huffington Post\, and Los Angeles Review of Books\, where she is a contributing editor. Ms. Buckley is also the founder and director of Prison Arts Collective\, an initiative dedicated to expanding access to the arts to those are incarcerated. SUMMARY:Rustic Beauty\, Refined Beauty: Contrasts in Japanese Ceramic Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 27\n1:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Heather Simmerman  \nIn this survey of Japanese ceramics from prehistoric times to the modern era\, we will see social\, religious\, and political influences that were expressed in the medium of ceramics during the history of Japan. Examples of wares and works from all three realms of ceramic design and production\, i.e. applied\, decorative\, and fine art ceramics\, will show that expressions of both rustic and refined aesthetic traditions remain vibrant today. \nHeather Simmerman was born and raised in the Chicago area\, frequently visiting the Art Institute of Chicago. She earned a B.A. in Biology from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Indiana University\, then pursued a career in the biotech industry. She is a member of the Museum’s Asian Arts Council  and its associated study group\, as well as a docent in training at the Museum. \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link.
