SUMMARY:CANCELED: Virtual Realities: Extreme Illusionism in Qing Court Painting
DESCRIPTION:Please note that the Museum is taking the necessary precautions and following the guidelines communicated by the California Department of Public Health. Due to their recommendations of limiting nonessential gatherings and the extension of federal social distancing guidelines to April 30\,  this event has been canceled.  We regret the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding of these circumstances. Please contact the Museum with any questions at 619.232.7931 or check here for updates. \nCreating the illusion of three dimensions on a two-dimensional surface has historically been a goal of some artists both in Europe and China\, but utilizing very different approaches. What were the tricks of the trade used by these artists and how was illusionistic art valued by its audiences? In the early 18th century\, a collision of these two traditions occurred\, primarily between a supreme connoisseur\, the Qianlong Emperor\, and an extraordinarily versatile artist\, Giuseppe Castiglione\, also known as Lang Shining. The marvels in art and architecture that they co-created will be the subject of this lecture by Dr. Elaine Pierce\, Museum docent.\n \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council \nFree AAC members / $10 Museum members /$12 nonmembers / $8 students
