Metcalf Jr. Curator of Prints\, Drawings and Photographs\, RISD Museum\nVirtual Event \n  \nExplore Shahzia Sikander: Extraordinary Realities\, an acclaimed exhibition covering the first 15 years of work by Shahzia Sikander (Pakistani-American\, b. 1969) that was seen in New York\, Providence\, and Houston in 2021 and 2022. Sikander gained international recognition in the 1990s for her pioneering role in bringing painting traditions from South and Central Asia into dialogue with contemporary practices. The talk will trace the show’s development and the artist’s evolution as she interrogated themes such as cultural identity\, colonial and postcolonial histories\, gender and sexuality\, and power structures generally. \nJan Howard is the Houghton P. Metcalf Jr. Curator of Prints\, Drawings and Photographs at the RISD Museum where she previously also served as Chief Curator. Prior to her arrival at RISD in 2000\, she spent fourteen years as a curator in the Department of Prints\, Drawings and Photographs at The Baltimore Museum of Art. She trained at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas\, where she did her graduate work in art history. Her exhibitions and publications have focused on modern and contemporary art.
