SUMMARY:Drawing Instruction in the Amazon: Artistic Creative Formation in the Mojos Region
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 16\n10:00 a.m.\nSpeakers: Verónica Muñoz-Nájar\, PhD\, Associate Curator of Art of the Spanish Americas\, the Thoma Foundation\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nJoin us as Dr. Muñoz-Nájar examines the fascinating intersection of art\, colonialism\, and cultural transformation in 18th-century Amazonia. The presentation explores how Spanish administrator Lázaro de Ribera established drawing schools in the Mojos region as a tool for both “civilizing” Indigenous populations and spurring economic development. \nThe lecture highlights the remarkable work of Indigenous artists including Heugene\, Avirá\, Guayacho\, Guacayane\, Noé\, and Hojeari\, who studied and reinterpreted European masters like Carracci\, Guercino\, and Le Brun. Through their drawings\, these artists created a unique visual language that both emulated European academic traditions and subtly subverted them\, embedding their own cultural perspectives and artistic agency. \nDr. Muñoz-Nájar will demonstrate how these works served as both a bridge and a boundary between colonial authority and Indigenous expression\, revealing how artistic education became a complex space where European aesthetics were simultaneously adopted\, transformed\, and reimagined within the context of Spain’s colonial project in the Americas. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which offers a platform for renowned scholars and experts from the art world to share their insights and knowledge on topics related to art history\, art theory\, and\nthe museum’s collections. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: Wonders of Creation\, a last look
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 26th \n1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT \n  \nIn this tour we take a last look at The San Diego Museum of Art’s special exhibition Wonders of Creation: Art\, Science\, and Innovation in the Islamic World\, which closed in January and has now traveled to the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College. Wonders of Creation explores intersections of art and science in Islamic intellectual and visual culture from the 8th century to the present\, using the lens of “wonder” as defined by an influential 13th-century Islamic cosmography describing the universe. Written in Arabic and Persian by Zakariyya ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini and entitled The Wonders of Creation and the Rarities of Existence\, this text catalogues the marvels of the universe in a single\, richly illustrated book. We willl explore a few of the exhibition’s 200 works through the framework of Qazwini’s text. Following the book’s narrative through the celestial and terrestrial realms\, we will have an opportunity to view art that connects with topics such as astronomy\, astrology\, natural history\, medicine\, and geometry. Join us as we travel the world visually journeying to Spain\, North Africa\, the Middle East\, Asia and the modern diaspora. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n\nHosted by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \nFeatured: Star map depicting the Northern & Southern celestial hemispheres (with constellations inscribed in Devanagari). SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: Frames of Reference: Depictions of the East
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 13th \n1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT \nWhat we see depends on how close or far away we are from an object or scene\, as well as the light and our focus. It also depends on the prism through which we view the world beyond our own. In this virtual tour we will dissect how point of view influenced perceptions in the genre of art known as “Orientalism\,” which shared romanticized depictions of places and people “East” of a Eurocentric frame of reference. In this virtual tour\, we will explore how these artists presented images\, realistic and imagined\, of the Islamic world. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: Slow Looking
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 22nd \n1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT \n  \nJoin us for a mindful looking experience.  Pablo Picasso once said\, “It’s not what you look at that matters\, it’s what you see.” \nSlow looking/ mindful looking at art offers numerous benefits\, including increased appreciation\, deeper understanding\, and enhanced emotional connection. This differs from a typical tour as we do not offer much information on the art or the artist. The focus is on breath work and encouraging an internal dialogue with yourself about details\, colors\, and textures that might otherwise go unnoticed. You may also discover new symbols\, themes\, or emotions\, unlocking a richer comprehension. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: Deconstructing Cultural Imperialism in Art
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, April 14 \n1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT \nIn the past\, museums often told cultural stories from the point of view of one part of society\, disregarding a myriad of cultures and perspectives. Today there is an effort on the part of those institutions to rectify that. This tour will focus on the art of these often imperial cultures from the vantage point of people who are not always well-represented in museums. What else was going on in the world that we do not see in the art and why do we not see it? \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: Korea in Color
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 4th \n1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT \n  \nThis tour will explore The San Diego Museum of Art’s special exhibition\, Korea in Color. This exhibition invites visitors to encounter the role art once played in everyday Korean life across four themes connected to a traditional household: protection offered by animals at the doorstep; symbols of abundance and longevity in the garden; scholarly objects and books in the study; and the appreciation of majestic mountains beyond the walls of the home. These works\, many on view in the US for the first time\, highlight the continued influence of color\, showcase the legacy of auspicious images\, and span a variety of media.
