SUMMARY:Green Carpet: The 12th Player with Betsabeé Romero
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 8\n4:30–7:00 p.m.\nThe San Diego Museum of Art front steps\nBalboa Park\, Plaza de Panama \n  \nEnjoy this FREE community celebration featuring internationally acclaimed artist Betsabeé Romero!\nCelebrate the power of art\, community\, and soccer at Green Carpet: The 12th Player\, a free public event by internationally acclaimed Mexican artist Betsabeé Romero. Presented during the excitement of the FIFA World Cup and Leagues Cup\, this special gathering transforms the Plaza de Panama into a symbolic soccer field created collaboratively by Romero and students from San Diego and Tijuana. \nInspired by the idea of the “12th Player”—the fans whose passion\, traditions\, and collective spirit give meaning to the game—the project explores how sports can unite communities across borders. Just as every team is strengthened by its supporters\, our communities are shaped by the people and causes they champion. \nFollowing the unveiling of the installation\, guests are invited to participate in a community picnic on the field\, celebrating friendship\, dialogue\, and cultural exchange. Bring your family\, friends\, and food to share as we gather to experience the Museum as a place for connection and belonging. \nGreen Carpet: The 12th Player features \n\nUnveiling of Green Carpet: The 12th Player art installation\nRemarks by internationally acclaimed Mexican artist Betsabeé Romero\nPerformances by Yolanda Orrantia\nInvitation to play\, eat\, and lounge on the art installation soccer field\nand a special soccer surprise…\n\nVisitors are encouraged to come con tu camisa puesta (“with your shirt on”)\, wearing a jersey or shirt representing a favorite team\, community\, organization\, school\, or social cause. Together\, these shirts become a powerful visual reminder that while we all support different teams\, we also proudly wear the colors of the causes and communities that matter most to us. \nThe evening also anticipates the public opening on Thursday\, August 13 of Betsabeé Romero: Tejiendo Redes (Weaving Nets)\, an art installation created by Betsabeé Romero that celebrates cross-border collaboration\, shared creativity\, and the cultural ties that unite our region. The exhibition will be on view in the Dammeyer Gallery at MOPA@SDMA August 13\, 2026–January 3\, 2027. \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening of art\, soccer\, food\, and community as we celebrate the connections that make us stronger—on the field and beyond.

Conceived as part of the Museum’s Centennial\, Local Visions grew out of an open call that invited local artists to reimagine the Museum’s landmark exterior through their own contemporary perspectives. The response to the call was remarkable\, with an inspiring range of proposals that demonstrated the depth of talent in our community. From these submissions\, a selection of works was chosen to reflect both the diversity of artistic approaches and the shared sense of connection to this historic building. \nTogether\, these works illuminate how a single façade can serve as both subject and symbol; honored\, transformed\, and reinterpreted in ways that bridge community and architecture\, past and present\, tradition and innovation. \nMany thanks to the artists whose work appears in the exhibition. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Wagner Humphreys\, Timeless (detail)\, 2025. Join or upgrade today by calling 619.696.1941 to secure your seats for this event. \n  \n\n  \nAbout the Exhibition \nKnown for his beguiling portraits of Paris nightlife and the unvarnished local characters of Montmartre\, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into an aristocratic family in the South of France in 1864. Growing up as a child with a disability that caused his legs to stop developing\, Toulouse-Lautrec turned to drawing rather than the sports his family pursued. His short but celebrated career immortalized the cabaret culture of Belle Époque Paris and revolutionized the art of the poster. Working in the popular and modern art form of the color lithograph\, Toulouse-Lautrec reached unprecedented audiences with spellbinding visuals and eye-catching colors. Inspired and encouraged by Impressionists such as Edgar Degas and his close friend Vincent van Gogh\, and taking influence from the flattened color patterns of Japanese graphic arts\, Toulouse-Lautrec left an unforgettable image of the spectacle\, people\, and performers of turn-of-the-century Paris. Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to see original works from this celebrated artist. \n
