These textiles are an integral part of the character\, lives\, and culture of the people in rural Punjab where they are produced. One form of Phulkaris known as Sainchis is notable for whimsical depictions of animals\, birds\, and human figures.  \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Cristin Sethi of the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University will examine a select group of Sainchi Phulkaris and offer new ways of considering these textiles given the details of their iconographical programs and individual histories. In this version of Not Fade Away\, a project she designed for the San Diego Museum of Art\, Hayes stitches together several types of pliant materials — colored plastic theatrical gels\, translucent organza\, and opaque reflective gold lamé — to create dynamic constructions that swoop through the Sculpture Court\, activating their surroundings.
