DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 14\n11:00 a.m \n  \nJoin the Museum’s Latin American Arts Council (LAAC) on a field trip to the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach for an in-depth\, guided tour of Judy Baca: Memorias de Nuestra Tierra\, a Retrospective\, led by LAAC board member Alessandra Moctezuma. We will meet at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday\, November 14 at the entrance to the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Avenue\, Long Beach\, CA 90802). \nJudy Baca: Memorias de Nuestra Tierra\, a Retrospective is the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of the internationally renowned Chicana muralist\, public intellectual\, and community activist\, Judy Baca. Baca has been engaged in the creation of sites of public memory within historically disenfranchised communities since 1976. In mid-1970s Los Angeles\, the art of “contestation” and place-making was already finding voice in Baca’s work. She pioneered a collaborative model that enabled young people to weave “hidden” histories of their underrepresented communities into monumental public artworks. These murals celebrated people’s contributions and articulated their stories and struggles. For the disenfranchised in California\, and in the larger US\, Baca’s works became epic narratives\, connecting youth with their diverse heritage and creating new “sites of public memory.” \nThe exhibition is divided thematically into three sections that present different aspects of Baca’s artistic production. Gallery A is the Womanist Gallery\, wherein we see female power presented. This gallery delves with greater insight into Baca’s more intimate history\, and her very personal explorations of feminism\, gender\, and body politics. Gallery B will feature a Baca Public Art Survey\, exploring her pivotal and career-defining work through the Social and Public Arts Resource Center\, an organization she founded in 1976. In Gallery C\, visitors will discover the history of Baca’s first masterpiece\, the Great Wall of Los Angeles. This half-mile-long mural occupies the Tujunga Wash in the San Fernando Valley. The mural tells the story of California from prehistoric times to the 1950s and takes special care in presenting the lesser-known histories of the ethnic groups who inhabit this state. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 6\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Betty Seid\, independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer \n  \nJoin the South Asian Arts Council for a four-part series on Modern & Contemporary Art from India. The fourth and final lecture in the series focuses on New Narratives for the New Millennium: Contemporary Art from India. \n\nNew Narratives: Contemporary Art from India (2007) was the first exhibition in the United State to include works made by Indian artists in the twenty-first century. As curator for the exhibition\, I chose the title “New Narratives” to demonstrate how narration continued to be a connective thread that binds contemporary artists to the rich Indian tradition of storytelling. At the same time\, my curatorial priority was to present artmaking in India today and to affirm India’s rising presence in the global art world. \nWe will look at the paintings\, installations and video works by the 21 artists in the exhibition. \n\nBetty Seid is an independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer. She was previously Research Associate and Exhibition Coordinator for South Asian Art in the Department of Asian Art of The Art Institute of Chicago. As discussed in this talk\, silk and ceramic arts were raised to new levels and served as a major means to regain power and influence. Islamic architecture\, gardens\, and poetry will also be explored. \n  \nSpeaker Elaine Pierce worked as a physician (MD) for over 30 years\, first in primary care and then in public health with the County of San Diego. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker:  Cesáreo Moreno\, Chief Curator and Visual Arts Director\, National Museum of Mexican Art \n  \nThe National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA) in Chicago has organized a Day of the Dead exhibition each year since its founding. Throughout the course of these 35 unique presentations\, it has developed and expanded all its best practices and strengthened the bond with its community. The museum has built an unparalleled collection of art objects related to the theme\, from pre-Cuauhtémoc artifacts\, to folk art\, to fine art. The knowledge base acquired on this age-old topic is derived from scholarship and annual visits to the far corners of Mexico to investigate how the holiday manifests in different regions\, as well as in the US. \nCesáreo Moreno has been with the NMMA since 1992. He has been the Visual Arts Director since 1995\, and was named the museum’s first full-time Chief Curator in 2004. Moreno has curated numerous exhibitions for the NMMA\, as well as for the El Paso Museum of Art\, Smithsonian Latino Center\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center. His most important assignments at NMMA have included curating The House on Mango Street (2016)\, A Declaration of Immigration (2008)\, and The African Presence in México: From Yanga to the Present (2006). DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 9\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Betty Seid\, independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer \n  \nJoin the South Asian Arts Council for a four-part series on Modern & Contemporary Art from India. The third lecture in the series focuses on 1970s\, 1980s\, and 1990s: Poetic Realism and New Pictorialism. \n\nNarrative art with recognizable subjects was paramount during the 1970s\, 80s and 90s in India. Realism\, which had been briefly sidelined by Abstract art\, re-entered the Indian artists’ vocabulary. A long tradition of figurative art was already in place\, but now the human figure served as vehicle for expression\, often set in a floaty\, non-European perspective space. We will be looking at four representative artists from the late twentieth century who comfortably found a place for Indian-ness in Modern Art:  KG Subramanyan\, Tyeb Mehta\, Gulammohammed Sheikh\, and Bhupen Khakar. \n\nBetty Seid is an independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer. She was previously Research Associate and Exhibition Coordinator for South Asian Art in the Department of Asian Art of The Art Institute of Chicago. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 4\n10:30 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian & Islamic Art at The San Diego Museum of Art \n  \nThe Edwin Binney 3rd Collection is comprised of about 1\,450 works created throughout India over 800 years\, from the 12th to the 20th centuries. An heir to the Crayola fortune\, the late Binney aimed to create an encyclopedic collection of Indian painting. The Museum acquired this collection in 1990. It is considered one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of South Asian paintings outside of India and attracts scholars and patrons from around the world. \nLadan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian & Islamic Art at The San Diego Museum of Art\, will present the newest rotation of the Binney Collection\, an exhibition titled Pearls from the Ocean of Contentment. Dr. Akbarnia’s experience is rich with a focus on the arts of the Islamic world\, in particular from Iran\, Central Asia\, and India. Prior to her tenure at the Museum\, she was most recently the Curator and Assistant Keeper for the Islamic Collections at The British Museum in London. SUMMARY:Butterflies on Chinese Art with a Special Focus on Chinese Snuff Bottles
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 30\n1:00–2:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Clare Chu\, Director and Secretary\, International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society \n  \nButterflies are rich in biological diversity; there are over 1\,300 species in China today and many active societies of lepidopterists studying them. This lecture looks at the materials that are used to depict butterflies such as porcelain\, amber\, and lacquerware\, and analyzes the symbolism inherent in the decoration of these pieces. It also examines the “dreaming” story from the philosopher Zhuangzi\, who wrote one of the foundational texts of Chinese literature and philosophy\, also entitled Zhuangzi. Later interpretations of dreams in the Chinese literary tradition drew on this strange and radical story in which Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly but awoke wondering if he was a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi. \nClare Chu has worked in the field of Chinese snuff bottles for almost forty years\, and is the secretary and a director of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society. This year\, Chu became the editor of the Society’s Journal. Chu continues to work as a scholar-dealer\, focusing on the development of collections with their owners\, and as a lecturer and teacher. Chu has curated a number of museum exhibitions of snuff bottles: one in 2016 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and another in 2018 at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. She is currently curating an exhibition of over 750 bottles to be held in late October at the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei\, for which she has written three fully illustrated catalogues. The exhibition is entitled A Courtly Gathering of Qing Treasures: Chinese Snuff Bottles from Taiwanese Collections. Chu is also a published poet\, who often draws upon her knowledge of Asian art for inspiration. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link.
