Please contact the Museum with any questions at 619.232.7931 or check here for updates. \nMuseum Boardroom\n\nEmbroidered textiles from Punjab\, popularly referred to as Phulkaris (“floral work”)\, are diverse in their compositions and patterns. These textiles are an integral part of the character\, lives\, and culture of the people in rural Punjab where they are produced. One form of Phulkaris known as Sainchis is notable for whimsical depictions of animals\, birds\, and human figures.  \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Cristin Sethi of the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University will examine a select group of Sainchi Phulkaris and offer new ways of considering these textiles given the details of their iconographical programs and individual histories. Click here to see what each package offers. \n\nBLOOM BASH Featured Artists\nRachel Hayes\n\n \nRachel Hayes\, an artist inspired by traditions of quilt making\, sculpture\, painting\, Minimalism and Land Art\, creates installations that embrace light to transform space. In this version of Not Fade Away\, a project she designed for the San Diego Museum of Art\, Hayes stitches together several types of pliant materials — colored plastic theatrical gels\, translucent organza\, and opaque reflective gold lamé — to create dynamic constructions that swoop through the Sculpture Court\, activating their surroundings. Colorful dapples of light play across the ground\, giving the viewer a new awareness of place\, time\, and space. The warm color palette of this work evokes the opulence of the Museum\, the epic sunsets off the coast\, and the golden Oklahoma sunshine\, where the artist resides. \nRachel Hayes received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in Fiber\, and her MFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University. Workshop participants will learn to layer thick layers of paint (impasto) to create textured still life paintings of delectable desserts. Led by Museum Educator Collete Tamayo\, this workshop also includes an exclusive before-hours tour of the Museum’s California Colorists installation.  \nOpen to all skill levels. The San Diego Museum of Art has been the beneficiary and the conservator of several collections but none as large as the Binney Collection. Items from Edwin Binney 3rd (1925–1986)\, an heir to the Crayola fortune\, include world-renowned paintings and miniature sculptures from the 2nd to 16th century. Parts of the collection have been exhibited at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec\, Museo Nacional de Antropología\, Mexico City\, and the Museo ThyssenBornemisza\, Madrid. \n\nSponsored by the North County Chapter
