SUMMARY:Qing Dynasty Ceramics: An Unprecedented Era of Colorful Glaze Innovations
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Allie Arnell\, Museum Docent\, Independent Scholar\, and Consultant\n \nStep into the unprecedented Qing Dynasty era of colorful glaze innovations with Allie Arnell\, Museum docent. \nThe Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) in China was a time of great change and innovation\, especially in the field of ceramics. The war and instability that led to the rise of the Manchu rulers of this dynasty left the great imperial kilns in shambles. Several early rulers of the Qing dynasty reinvigorated the ceramic industry. These rulers celebrated both the colorful glazes of several great moments of Chinese ceramic history and fresh approaches to color and glaze technique. Additionally\, several changes to the structure of the industry allowed innovations to flourish at this time. The result was an elegant array of colorful vessels that are still celebrated today. \nPlease register by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. Space is limited. \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Tea Ceremony in Medieval Japan: Its Origins and Embodiment of the Senses
DESCRIPTION:While the ancient capital of Kyoto was stricken by plague and civil war\, the 8th Shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga (1436-1490) was preoccupied with the construction of a retirement estate (Higashiyama-dono) in the Eastern hills\, comprising of an extensive garden\, a three-storied pavilion (Jishou-ji aka Ginkaku-ji Silver Pavilion\,1490)\, a worship hall (Tougudou\, 1486)\, and tea room (Doujinsai\, 1486). Yet\, with the assistance of companions (doboshu) and monks (ji)\, the interior of Doujinsai in particular became a venue for placement (shouin kazari) of Chinese (karamono) utensils and tea wares. The lecture will investigate how the spatial composition and use of objects in the Doujinsai lended to developing aesthetic concepts\, including the pathos of things (mono no aware)\, pregnant pause (ma)\, and the mystery of beauty (yugen no bi).  Examples will also be shown as to how both guest and host access these aesthetic experiences via the five senses\, and how a simple cup of tea (kissako) can help facilitate even the lay person into experiencing the present moment. \nAnne Alene is an independent scholar in art history\, and has been leading travel programs to Japan for independent travelers\, small parties\, major museum institutions\, and arts organizations since 1997.  She is currently doing doctoral coursework at Claremont Graduate University in Cultural & Museum Studies\, and investigating how site-specific art and architecture plays a role in memorializing trauma/disaster\, as a pilgrimage destination\, and in revitalization of local regions. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be held virtually via Zoom. The virtual event begins at 1:00 p.m. PT. \nPlease register by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link via confirmation email with instructions once registration is complete. \nRegister now. \n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Mithila Painting Today: New Uses for Ancient Deities
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. David Szanton\, President\, Ethnic Arts Foundation \nThe Hindu Pantheon abounds with Gods and Goddesses\, each with a unique physical appearance and personal characteristics. For at least the last 20 years\, growing numbers of the women painters in the Mithila region of Bihar have been using the ancient figures and narratives of the Hindu Pantheon to subtly\, or very directly\, argue for social and political change in the domains of patriarchy\, gender equality\, love\, marriage\, and caste oppression. The artists are finding and drawing on new meanings in the lives and images of Durga\, Shiva and Parvati\, Ram and Sita\, Radha and Krishna\, as well as Raja Salhesh and the kohbar\, the classic Maithil marriage icon. \nThis online presentation will focus on and illustrate with numerous paintings the new uses and meanings in these ancient figures and narratives that are enabling women in Mithila to express their concerns and desires in the rapidly changing worlds around them. \n  \nPlease register by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. Space is limited. \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: El Sueño Mexicano by Jorge Tellaeche
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 13 \n5:30 p.m. \n  \n\nJoin prominent Mexican artist Jorge Tellaeche for a presentation and in-depth discussion on his work El Sueño Mexicano (The Mexican Dream)\, a mural installed on the international border between Tijuana and San Diego that was first unveiled on Wednesday\, December 17\, 2019\, in coordination with the celebration of International Migrants Day. Originally placed in Playas de Tijuana\, the mural standing 32 feet wide by 19 feet high is made up of Tellaeche’s own unique style of colors painted on polyvinyl chloride. The mural was commissioned by the International Labour Organization in an effort to promote the diversity of migration by workers across the border and bring attention to a border culture of workers in a constant state of transition. \nTellaeche was inspired by the struggle of seeing the passion of immigrants and their relentless efforts of succeeding in their quest to support their families and to depict and represent workers from around the world. Highlighting Latin America countries whose intentions are to look up to the north for a better future of possibilities\, he believes all these workers – despite their origins – have the same common mission: to connect arm-in-arm\, touching on human interaction. \nTellaeche lived many years in Tijuana but was born in Mexico City and currently resides there. His work is part of private and public collections around the world and has been exhibited in galleries\, museums\, and universities across Europe\, the United States\, and Mexico. \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. \nReserve my spot! \n\n  \nSponsored by the Latin American Arts Council. \nFeatured Image: Photograph of the artist\, Jorge Tellaeche\, in juxtaposition to his mural El Sueño Mexicano.
