SAAC virtual socials are conversational events that offer the opportunity to “mingle” and get to know one another within the context of an art theme\, plus cocktails are welcome! \nThis year we will honor Dr. B. Very well known to the SAAC community\, Dr. Goswamy had deep connections to the Museum’s Binney Collection\, and was instrumental in bringing this collection to the world stage through his monographs and catalogs. \nTo honor Dr. Goswamy at the event\, we will use his popular masterpiece\, The Spirit of Indian Painting: Close Encounters with 101 Great Works 1100-1900 to facilitate discussion. SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: Deconstructing Cultural Imperialism in Art
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 24 \n1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT \nIn the past\, Museums often told cultural stories from the point of view of one part of society\, disregarding a myriad of cultures and perspectives. Today there is an effort on the part of those institutions to rectify that. This tour will focus on the art of these often imperial cultures from the vantage point of people who are not always well-represented in museums. What else was going on in the world that we do not see in the art and why do we not see it? \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n\nHosted by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \nFeatured: Queen Henrietta Maria of England\, Anthony Van Dyck\, 1636-1638

Presented in seven chapters in reverse-chronological order\, the film begins with Yongho’s suicide and ends with a first date full of the promise and verve of youth. The moments in between these events as seen through the lens of Yongho’s life observe South Korea’s tumultuous political history throughout the late 20th century\, and in turn elegize a generation of marginalized people with “a quiet\, heartbreaking power” (A.O. Scott\, The New York Times). A new 4K restoration. \nDIRECTOR & CAST:\nDirector: Lee Chang-dong\nStarring: Sol Kyung-gu\, Moon So-ri\, and Kim Yeo-jin

SUMMARY:Hidden in Plain Sight: Clay Sculpture in Southern Asia
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Susan S. Bean\, Chair\, Center for Art and Archaeology\, American Institute of Indian Studies\nVirtual Event \n  \nAir-dried clay (a.k.a. terracruda)\, along with stone\, metal\, wood\, and fired clay\, stands among southern Asia’s oldest and most widely used mediums for sculpture. Typically finished in vivid color\, the medium has been largely overlooked in studies of the region’s arts\, often misidentified as stucco and terracotta\, or sidelined as too breakable and exuberantly colored to be ‘art.’ This excursion brings together some of the most prominent practices across the region to consider why painted air-dried clay has been so valued as medium for figural sculpture\, and what its sidelining reveals about the study of visual culture. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Dynamic Equilibrium: Berenice Abbott’s Documentary of the Invisible
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Sarah M. Miller\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History\, Mills College at Northeastern University\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nThe San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council is excited to welcome Sarah M. Miller\, Ph.D.\, who will explore how photographer Berenice Abbott’s unique theory of documentary photography was shaped by her experience amidst Europe’s photographic avant-gardes and her collaboration with American art critic Elizabeth McCausland. Abbott put this theory into practice in her WPA-sponsored project Changing New York (1935-39). But when she published the project in book form in 1939\, it was subjected to editorial censorship that made it impossible for readers understand its scope\, creativity\, message\, and political implications. Having recently reconstructed the photographer’s suppressed original manuscript for the book\, Miller will discuss what it reveals not only about Abbott’s sophisticated photography and her analysis of New York’s built environment\, but also about 1930s contests over the very meaning of “documentary.” \n  \nSee works by Berenice Abbott after the lecture in Berenice Abbott: Changing New York\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art in Gallery 14/15 with entry near the Panama 66 restaurant. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \n  \nFeatured: Berenice Abbott\, Metropolitan Life Building\, New York (detail)\, ca. 1935.
