SUMMARY:Conversing with the Gods: about the painter Manaku (older brother of Nainsukh) and his work
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 10\n6:00 p.m. Registration\n6:30 p.m. Dinner\n7:30 p.m. Lecture \nLearn about the artistic journey of the 18th century painter\, Manaku\, coming from an uncommonly talented family that lived in an obscure little village in the hills of northern India. Endowed with soaring imagination and great painterly skills\, this man – with a name that literally means a ruby\, that ‘stone of fame and mystique’\, whose glow keeps hinting at an inner fire – was capable of painting giant rings of time upon timeless waters\, envisioning the world of gods and demons littered with cosmic battles and earthly triumphs\, but also gazing\, with tender eyes\, upon the world of two lovers in which there is tortured loneliness at one moment\, but\, in the next\, ‘her garlands fall on his chest and glisten like white cranes on a dark cloud.’ \nThis lecture is led by Dr. B.N. Goswamy\, distinguished art historian and Professor Emeritus of Art History at the Panjab University\, Chandigarh. \nTickets include full Indian dinner \nSponsored by the Committee for the Arts of the Indian Subcontinent \n$30 CAIS members and full time students / $40 member / $45 nonmember

SUMMARY:Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and Chinese Poets in Medieval Japan
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 26\n1:00 p.m. \nThe transmission of Zen Buddhism from China introduced early medieval Japanese painters to an array of new figural subjects\, some religious in nature and others ostensibly less so. Alongside sinicized devotional imagery came pictures of a host of figures from Chinese antiquity—praiseworthy monks\, notable eccentrics\, and celebrated literary heroes. Dr. Aaron Rio will examine the concurrent reception of these images in medieval Japan through an exploration of the dynamic interaction between pictures of Avalokiteshvara\, the bodhisattva of compassion\, and ancient Chinese poets. Dr. Rio is the Andrew W. Mellon Assistant Curator of Japanese and Korean Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. \nFree for AAC members / $10 Museum members / $12 nonmembers / $8 students \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council
