SUMMARY:Mithila Painting Today: New Uses for Ancient Deities
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. David Szanton\, President\, Ethnic Arts Foundation \nThe Hindu Pantheon abounds with Gods and Goddesses\, each with a unique physical appearance and personal characteristics. For at least the last 20 years\, growing numbers of the women painters in the Mithila region of Bihar have been using the ancient figures and narratives of the Hindu Pantheon to subtly\, or very directly\, argue for social and political change in the domains of patriarchy\, gender equality\, love\, marriage\, and caste oppression. The artists are finding and drawing on new meanings in the lives and images of Durga\, Shiva and Parvati\, Ram and Sita\, Radha and Krishna\, as well as Raja Salhesh and the kohbar\, the classic Maithil marriage icon. \nThis online presentation will focus on and illustrate with numerous paintings the new uses and meanings in these ancient figures and narratives that are enabling women in Mithila to express their concerns and desires in the rapidly changing worlds around them. \n  \nPlease register by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. Space is limited. \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 12\, 2020\n6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. \nFree virtual program for middle school and high school students offered on Zoom. \nPresented by last year’s Museum Teen Council\, the 20th Century in Color Teen Art Café event is an opportunity for middle school and high school students to meet and learn about the history of mural art and contemporary murals. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to participate in a painting workshop led by San Diego-based muralist\, Acton Standard. In this workshop\, students will get a street-level history view into the roots of graffiti morphing into the giant commissioned murals of today. Using aspects from the mural history session\, the students will scale an image to a canvas and create their own graffiti/mural image inspired by Roland Petersen’s Shaded Figure painting from the Museum’s permanent collection. After the event\, the Museum team will create a virtual mural combining each of the students’ works of art. \nEnjoy the company of fellow teen artists and have the chance to win prizes! \nRSVP by email to teenartcafe@sdmart.org. Please include your full name and school. Log-in instructions and a supply list will be provided with your confirmation. \nThe Museum will not provide materials\, but will offer suggestions of supplies that may be accessible to all. \n  \nFeatured: Acton Standard. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: El Sueño Mexicano by Jorge Tellaeche
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 13 \n5:30 p.m. \n  \n\nJoin prominent Mexican artist Jorge Tellaeche for a presentation and in-depth discussion on his work El Sueño Mexicano (The Mexican Dream)\, a mural installed on the international border between Tijuana and San Diego that was first unveiled on Wednesday\, December 17\, 2019\, in coordination with the celebration of International Migrants Day. Originally placed in Playas de Tijuana\, the mural standing 32 feet wide by 19 feet high is made up of Tellaeche’s own unique style of colors painted on polyvinyl chloride. The mural was commissioned by the International Labour Organization in an effort to promote the diversity of migration by workers across the border and bring attention to a border culture of workers in a constant state of transition. \nTellaeche was inspired by the struggle of seeing the passion of immigrants and their relentless efforts of succeeding in their quest to support their families and to depict and represent workers from around the world. Highlighting Latin America countries whose intentions are to look up to the north for a better future of possibilities\, he believes all these workers – despite their origins – have the same common mission: to connect arm-in-arm\, touching on human interaction. \nTellaeche lived many years in Tijuana but was born in Mexico City and currently resides there. His work is part of private and public collections around the world and has been exhibited in galleries\, museums\, and universities across Europe\, the United States\, and Mexico. \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. \nReserve my spot! \n\n  \nSponsored by the Latin American Arts Council. \nFeatured Image: Photograph of the artist\, Jorge Tellaeche\, in juxtaposition to his mural El Sueño Mexicano.
