DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 26\n1:00 p.m. \nThe transmission of Zen Buddhism from China introduced early medieval Japanese painters to an array of new figural subjects\, some religious in nature and others ostensibly less so. Alongside sinicized devotional imagery came pictures of a host of figures from Chinese antiquity—praiseworthy monks\, notable eccentrics\, and celebrated literary heroes. Dr. Aaron Rio will examine the concurrent reception of these images in medieval Japan through an exploration of the dynamic interaction between pictures of Avalokiteshvara\, the bodhisattva of compassion\, and ancient Chinese poets. Dr. Rio is the Andrew W. This illustrated talk by Janet Brody Esser\, Ph.D. and SDSU professor emerita\, examines the primacy of cloth and clothing in ancient American societies and the status of weavers\, the vast majority of whom were women\, many of them high-born. The ability of cloth\, because of its portability\, to spread beliefs and techniques will be examined as well as the vital economic function served by textiles.
