Copley Auditorium \n  \nKorea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images sheds light on the use of color in Korean painting—known as polychrome painting (chaesaekhwa)—and its role in Korean culture. Join us for an insightful conversation exploring the history and influence of polychrome painting and its legacy of auspicious imagery. \nEleanor Soo-ah Hyun is The Korea Foundation and Samsung Foundation of Culture Associate Curator of Korean Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Prior to joining The Met in 2019\, she was the first Curator for the Korean Collections at The British Museum. At The Met\, she has curated exhibitions on Korean mother-of-pearl lacquer and ritual vessels. Her exhibition Lineages: Korean Art at The Met  (November 7th\, 2023 – October 20th \, 2024) focuses on modern and contemporary art and celebrates the 25th anniversary of The Met’s Arts of Korea gallery. \nRachel Jans is Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the San Diego Museum of Art and co-curator of Korea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images. Previously she was a curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, where she organized a range of exhibitions\, including New Work: Nevin Aladağ; Lineage: Paul Klee and Ruth Asawa; Nam June Paik: In Character\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 20\n4:00–6:00 p.m. PT\nVirtual Event \n  \nYou’re invited! Join the South Asian Arts Council (SAAC) for the annual SAAC Social. SAAC virtual socials are conversational events that offer the opportunity to “mingle” and get to know one another within the context of an art theme\, plus cocktails are welcome! \nThis year we will honor Dr. B. N. Goswamy\, who recently passed away. Very well known to the SAAC community\, Dr. Goswamy had deep connections to the Museum’s Binney Collection\, and was instrumental in bringing this collection to the world stage through his monographs and catalogs. \nTo honor Dr. Goswamy at the event\, we will use his popular masterpiece\, The Spirit of Indian Painting: Close Encounters with 101 Great Works 1100-1900 to facilitate discussion. Of the 101 works highlighted in the book\, 13—more than a tenth—are from the Binney Collection. \n  \nFor our gathering\, we ask that each attendee choose one of the 13 Binney Collection works\, and share with us why this particular work caught your eye. SUMMARY:Modern and Contemporary Art in Nepal: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 25\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Owen Duffy\, Ph.D.\, Nancy C. Allen Curator and Director of Exhibitions at Asia Society Texas\nVirtual Event \n  \nJoin us online to virtually travel with our speaker\, Asia Society Texas’s Nancy C. Allen Curator and Director of Exhibitions Owen Duffy\, to Kathmandu. Duffy will outline a foundational history of modern and contemporary art in Nepal\, beginning with the country’s so-called “father of modern art\,” Lain Singh Bangdel. After becoming part of the Independence-era artistic scene in Kolkata\, Bangdel traveled to London and Paris\, where he spent a decade experimenting with various avant-garde artistic styles. The lecture will then highlight key figures in Nepal’s 20th and 21st century art histories\, including Ashmina Ranjit\, Tsherin Sherpa\, and others. \n  \nSpeaker BiographyOwen Duffy\, Ph.D.\, is the Nancy C. Allen Curator and Director of Exhibitions at Asia Society Texas. Duffy comes to Asia Society Texas from St. John’s University’s Yeh Art Gallery where he served as its director since 2019\, leading the institution through physical renovations to the exhibition spaces and the creation of a new exhibition program around the theme of diplomacy. During his tenure he organized more than 20 exhibitions\, including Lain Singh Bangdel: Moon over Kathmandu\, the first solo museum exhibition outside Nepal of the country’s preeminent modern artist Lain Singh Bangdel (1919-2002). Duffy’s exhibitions have earned press in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Süddeutsche Zeitung\, Hyperallergic\, The Art Newspaper\, Brooklyn Rail\, and Art in America\, among others. In addition\, Duffy has published scholarship on the work of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei\, Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor\, and Nepali performance artist Ashmina Ranjit. Among other publications\, his writing about contemporary art has appeared ArtReview\, Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art\, Artforum\, Art & Education\, frieze\, Momus\, Journal of Curatorial Studies\, and BOMB. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nSave your spot by clicking on this link. In this multigenerational workshop\, you will get the chance to familiarize yourself with the Korean alphabet and create an abstract composition through letter layering.
