What were the tricks of the trade used by these artists and how was illusionistic art valued by its audiences? In the early 18th century\, a collision of these two traditions occurred\, primarily between a supreme connoisseur\, the Qianlong Emperor\, and an extraordinarily versatile artist\, Giuseppe Castiglione\, also known as Lang Shining. The marvels in art and architecture that they co-created will be the subject of this lecture. \n\n\nDr. Elaine Pierce’s childhood was influenced by her Chinese mother\, who was fiercely proud of her heritage and always a little wistful about leaving her native Malaysia after World War 2. At the age of 16\, Dr. Pierce was sent to spend the summer studying Chinese in Taiwan\, but she proceeded to goof off with the other American teenagers unleashed from parental scrutiny and managed to learn no useful language skills. A key experience during the trip was a visit to the spectacular National Palace Museum\, which sparked a lifelong love of Chinese art and culture. After practicing emergency medicine and then primary care medicine for many years\, followed by a second career in public health\, she had the opportunity to return to her first love through the San Diego Museum of Art’s docent training program\, which she completed in 2017. The war and instability that led to the rise of the Manchu rulers of this dynasty left the great imperial kilns in shambles. Several early rulers of the Qing dynasty reinvigorated the ceramic industry. These rulers celebrated both the colorful glazes of several great moments of Chinese ceramic history and fresh approaches to color and glaze technique. Additionally\, several changes to the structure of the industry allowed innovations to flourish at this time. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 18 \n10:00 a.m. \nSpeaker: Roxana Velásquez\, Maruja Baldwin Executive Director of The San Diego Museum of Art \nIn her decade-long tenure as the Maruja Baldwin Executive Director of The San Diego Museum of Art\, Roxana Velásquez has overseen the acquisition of more than 1\,100 works of art including important works by world-renowned artists including Francisco de Zurbarán’s Saint Francis in Prayer in a Grotto (1655)\, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida’s On the Seashore\, Valencia (1908)\, Jusepe de Ribera’s Saint Bartholomew (ca. 1632)\, Lucas Cranach the Younger’s Nymph of the Spring (ca. 1540)\, and John Singer Sargent’s Portrait of John Alfred Parsons Millet (1892). Join us for an illustrated virtual talk reviewing these and other significant acquisitions and her philosophy and plans for refining the collection as we move into the next decade. Following her remarks\, Ms. Velásquez will answer questions submitted by the audience. SUMMARY:Tea Ceremony in Medieval Japan: Its Origins and Embodiment of the Senses
DESCRIPTION:While the ancient capital of Kyoto was stricken by plague and civil war\, the 8th Shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga (1436-1490) was preoccupied with the construction of a retirement estate (Higashiyama-dono) in the Eastern hills\, comprising of an extensive garden\, a three-storied pavilion (Jishou-ji aka Ginkaku-ji Silver Pavilion\,1490)\, a worship hall (Tougudou\, 1486)\, and tea room (Doujinsai\, 1486). Yet\, with the assistance of companions (doboshu) and monks (ji)\, the interior of Doujinsai in particular became a venue for placement (shouin kazari) of Chinese (karamono) utensils and tea wares. The lecture will investigate how the spatial composition and use of objects in the Doujinsai lended to developing aesthetic concepts\, including the pathos of things (mono no aware)\, pregnant pause (ma)\, and the mystery of beauty (yugen no bi).  Examples will also be shown as to how both guest and host access these aesthetic experiences via the five senses\, and how a simple cup of tea (kissako) can help facilitate even the lay person into experiencing the present moment. \nAnne Alene is an independent scholar in art history\, and has been leading travel programs to Japan for independent travelers\, small parties\, major museum institutions\, and arts organizations since 1997.  She is currently doing doctoral coursework at Claremont Graduate University in Cultural & Museum Studies\, and investigating how site-specific art and architecture plays a role in memorializing trauma/disaster\, as a pilgrimage destination\, and in revitalization of local regions. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be held virtually via Zoom.
