DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 8:00 p.m.\nFilm begins at sundown.\n\n\n\n\nTake a trip into the art world as you sit under the stars in beautiful Balboa Park. Grab a picnic\, a blanket\, and a few friends and enjoy a selection of films whose themes take inspiration from the Museum’s permanent collection\, celebrating the recent completion of a large-scale reinstallation of these galleries. Films begin at sundown (approximately 8:00 p.m.) at the Botanical Lawn (east of the Museum.) \nThis artfully filmed adaptation of the 1891 Oscar Wilde novel of the same name uses light and shadow to create an ominous atmosphere in a cautionary tale about vanity and morality. The portrait of Dorian Gray that was used in the film\, inserted using three-strip Technicolor\, was painted by American artist Ivan Albright and now resides in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nPanama 66’s Grab-n-Go will be open until 8:00 p.m. \n1 hour 50 minutes. This film is not rated\, but would be considered suitable for most audiences by current Motion Picture of America Association standards. \n\n\nFree \n\n\nImage Credit: ClassicFlix.com

Copley Auditorium\nSaturday\, 8:00 p.m.\n\nJoin us for the premiere concert of the new Portraits in Jazz series! 2017 San Diego Jazz Hero Gilbert Castellanos presents a tribute to Duke Ellington and his orchestra featuring the Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra. Ken Poston\, Station Manager of Jazz 88.3 and Director of the Los Angeles Jazz Institute\, will give a talk at 8:00 p.m. before the concert at 8:30 p.m. \nThis premiere concert will feature original arrangements as recorded by the prolific big band composer and leader Duke Ellington. Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra\, an 18-piece big band\, is comprised of the finest musicians in San Diego\, and\, along with special guest musicians\, they are sure to bring swing to the Museum. \nJazz vocalist and classical guitarist Lorraine Castellanos will be giving a pre-concert dinner performance in Panama 66’s courtyard from 6:00 – 7:50 p.m. Beer\, wine\, and refreshments will be available for purchase from Panama 66 during the concert. Throughout the film\, Goya is an involuntary witness to history\, from the Inquisition to Napoleon’s invasion of Spain\, incapable of doing anything other than depicting the horrors he sees. SUMMARY:The Tale of Genji and Changing Images of the Third Princess
DESCRIPTION:Boardroom\nThursday\, 1:00 p.m.\n\nThe Tale of Genji\, often considered the first novel in the world\, was written by Lady Murasaki. It was the most venerated literary work among Japanese aristocrats and samurai warriors in early 11th-century Japan when it was written\, and enjoyed by commoners in later centuries. Masako Watanabe\, retired senior research associate for Japanese Art at the Metropolitan Museum in New York\, talks about the visualization of the complex inner feelings of the characters as well as focusing on how depictions of the Third Princess drastically changed during the Edo period (1615–1868).
