SUMMARY:Encountering Iban Textiles
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 24\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Thomas Murray\, HALI magazine Contributing Editor and Kristal Hale\, Conservator of Textiles at the Conservation Center of Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)\nVirtual Event \n  \nTextiles produced by the Iban people from the island of Borneo are known to convey messages across time and space by means of an archetypal iconography that includes human figures\, trees\, reptiles\, birds\, and geometric patterns. These encoded images follow ancestral traditions and customary laws known as adat; cloth becomes sacred through a combination of fine spinning\, dyeing\, and weaving that creates a sense of aesthetic wonder. \nThe famed anthropologist Alfred Gell referred to this state of mind as the “technology of enchantment”: the better the weaver’s technique\, the greater the cloth’s aesthetic beauty\, the more “agency” of spiritual power within an indigenous cultural context. \n  \nThomas Murray will offer insights into the ritual cloths of the Iban Dayak of Borneo\, share their cultural context within the longhouse way of life\, and present the two theoretical perspectives debated in academia using classical examples from his collection to illustrate his points. \nKristal Hale will bring the conversation into the present\, discussing her experience participating in the Iban Dayak ngar (mordant) ceremony at Rumah Garie Longhouse far upriver on a tributary of the Batang Baleh\, Sarawak\, Malaysian Borneo. The mordanting ceremony chemically and spiritually prepares white\, undyed cotton to bind with the natural plant dyes used in ikat. It is the ikat that gives the famous pua kumbu weavings their ritual power and cultural significance\, but it is only through the use of mordants that the highly valued deep red color from morinda citrifolia can be achieved. \n  \nSpeaker Bios: \nThomas Murray is an independent researcher\, collector\, lecturer\, and private dealer of Asian and tribal art with an emphasis on Indonesian sculpture and textiles\, as well as animistic art from other varied cultures. He also features Indian Trade Cloths from the 14th–18th centuries. \nA HALI Magazine Contributing Editor for the last 30 years\, he serves as their “in-house” expert on all tribal sculpture and textiles\, with over 50 publications. His most recent books\, Textiles of Japan\, Rarities From the Himalayas to Hawaii\, and Textiles of Indonesia\, were met with critical acclaim. Thomas Murray is past president of ATADA\, The Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association\, and served a three-year term as a member of President Obama’s Cultural Property Advisory Committee at the State Department. In a letter from a White House\, President Obama said\, “This dedicated individual brings a wealth of experience and talent to his new role and I am proud to have him serve in the months and years to come.” Thomas Murray continues to consult with museums and private clients all over the world. \nKristal Hale is Conservator of Textiles at the Conservation Center of Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). She holds an MA in art conservation with a textile specialization from the Bern University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Abegg-Stiftung\, Switzerland. Kristal was an Andrew W. Mellon Conservation Fellow at The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York. As someone who is engaged in the intersection of heritage preservation and contemporary museum practices\, Kristal participates in Museums of the 21st Century program with Tracing Patterns Foundation to support conservation education in Indonesia and greater Southeast Asia. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nSave your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link via confirmation email with instructions once you secure your place.\n \nSave my spot!\n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Detail of a ceremonial cloth\, pua’ kumbu’\, patterned with anthropomorphic figures\, Iban people\, Borneo.

Internationally\, German partners with Proyecto Coyote in Michoacán\, the Gobierno de Michoacán\, and the community of Cherán\, where he continues to teach and paint murals in his ancestral homeland. \n  \nRamon Franco Arambula\n\n  \nRamon Franco Arambula was born in Jalisco\, Mexico\, closely observing and working with the artistic work of his very talented uncle. At the age of eight\, he moved to Texas as a first-generation immigrant. He graduated from San Jose State University in California with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and started a custom\, handmade sculpture studio in the Bay Area. Ramon designs\, develops\, produces\, constructs\, and displays all his works himself all over the Bay Area and abroad. Ramon’s work has been described as “ethereal realism” and whimsically realistic. The work blends impossible imagery with elements of sculpture to create unique\, dreamlike environments. Elements of nature\, technology and spiritualism are major components of his work. He notes\, “Everything that I make means something\, my work feels safe\, and it makes me feel more in control. Whether it’s a 15-foot tall orchid or a 6-foot cake sculpture\, all my work is made from my necessity to understand and respond to my unique perspective of the world.” \n  \n\nBloom Bash Chairs\nRobin Wilson Carrier\nJaimi Lomas\nMitch Mitchell\nMicki Olin\nRhianna White\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nSweet & Savory Station Partners\n\n  \nA+M Catering\nAlma San Diego – A Tribute Portfolio Hotel by Marriott\nARLO San Diego\nARTIFACT at Mingei\nBeach Break Market\nBivouac Ciderworks\nBlanco Cocina + Cantina\nCake and Sip San Diego\nCannonball at Belmont Park\nCHiPZ HAPPEN\nCoast Catering\nCravory Cookies\nDang Brother Pizza\nDel’s Hideout\nFeast on This Culinary & Event Production\nFuego Marino\nGaribaldi\nGelatoLove\nJuan Jasper\nKairoa Brewing Co.\nLittle Fox Cups and Cones\nMister A’s\nNobu San Diego\nPanama 66\nThe Prado at Balboa Park\nPretzels & Pints\nProvisional Kitchen\nRanch 45\nSally’s Fish House and Bar\nSweet Petite Confections\nSTK\nTom Ham’s Lighthouse\nTop of the Market\nWavy Burgers\nThe Wild Thyme Company\nVessel Restaurant \n  \nBloom Bash Sponsors\n          \n\n                                   \n\n                                    \n\nMedia Sponsors

SUMMARY:Drawing Instruction in the Amazon: Artistic Creative Formation in the Mojos Region
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 16\n10:00 a.m.\nSpeakers: Verónica Muñoz-Nájar\, PhD\, Associate Curator of Art of the Spanish Americas\, the Thoma Foundation\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nJoin us as Dr. Muñoz-Nájar examines the fascinating intersection of art\, colonialism\, and cultural transformation in 18th-century Amazonia. The presentation explores how Spanish administrator Lázaro de Ribera established drawing schools in the Mojos region as a tool for both “civilizing” Indigenous populations and spurring economic development. \nThe lecture highlights the remarkable work of Indigenous artists including Heugene\, Avirá\, Guayacho\, Guacayane\, Noé\, and Hojeari\, who studied and reinterpreted European masters like Carracci\, Guercino\, and Le Brun. Through their drawings\, these artists created a unique visual language that both emulated European academic traditions and subtly subverted them\, embedding their own cultural perspectives and artistic agency. \nDr. Muñoz-Nájar will demonstrate how these works served as both a bridge and a boundary between colonial authority and Indigenous expression\, revealing how artistic education became a complex space where European aesthetics were simultaneously adopted\, transformed\, and reimagined within the context of Spain’s colonial project in the Americas. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which offers a platform for renowned scholars and experts from the art world to share their insights and knowledge on topics related to art history\, art theory\, and\nthe museum’s collections. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council.
