SUMMARY:The Tale of Genji and Changing Images of the Third Princess
DESCRIPTION:Boardroom\nThursday\, 1:00 p.m.\n\nThe Tale of Genji\, often considered the first novel in the world\, was written by Lady Murasaki. It was the most venerated literary work among Japanese aristocrats and samurai warriors in early 11th-century Japan when it was written\, and enjoyed by commoners in later centuries. Masako Watanabe\, retired senior research associate for Japanese Art at the Metropolitan Museum in New York\, talks about the visualization of the complex inner feelings of the characters as well as focusing on how depictions of the Third Princess drastically changed during the Edo period (1615–1868). Behl. This documentary travels to India\, Sri Lanka\, Thailand\, Lao PDR\, Cambodia\, Myanmar\, Nepal\, and Indonesia to document and tell the story of this great epic through multi-religious\, international cultural performances. Generations of children have learned the vast story of the “Ramayana” through the incredibly diverse methods of performance and storytelling. \nOne of the world’ greatest works of literature\, the Rama epic – the 2\,500-year-old classic and it’s many versions – teems with excitement. The story of Prince Rama’s quest to defeat a powerful demonic king\, rescue his abducted wife and re-establish order in the world is also\, for many\, a sacred tradition.
