This illustrated talk by Janet Brody Esser\, Ph.D. and SDSU professor emerita\, examines the primacy of cloth and clothing in ancient American societies and the status of weavers\, the vast majority of whom were women\, many of them high-born. The ability of cloth\, because of its portability\, to spread beliefs and techniques will be examined as well as the vital economic function served by textiles. See more upcoming workshops.\n\n\n\n\n\nCreate a series of small-scale works of art inspired by the exhibition Reflections on Monet in this plein air painting workshop led by Museum Educator Alyson Blum. The workshop will begin with an exclusive\, before-hours tour of the exhibition\, followed by instruction on multiple media\, including acrylic paint and water-soluble oil pastels\, at the picturesque Balboa Park Lily Pond. \nWorkshop fee includes all supplies. Open to all skill levels. This workshop will take place outdoors and it is recommended that participants bring water and a hat for shade. Internationally recognized as one of the leading sitar players\, Khan is is a prominent surbahar (bass sitar) exponent of his generation. \nHailing from a lineage of Maestros\, Irshad is the son and pupil of Ustad Imrat Khan and the nephew of Ustad Vilayat Khan – both world renowned sitar players. A child prodigy\, Khan gave his first public performance at the age of seven. His national debut was at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London\, England when he was only 13. At 18\, he made history as the youngest soloist to perform at one of the most prestigious international music festivals in London\, known as the Indian All Night Concert at the Proms. Sasanian art combines Near Eastern and Greco-Roman traditions\, and due to trade along the Silk Road\, the influence of Sasanian art was felt as far as China and Byzantium. Grab a picnic\, a blanket\, and a few friends and enjoy a selection of films whose themes take inspiration from the Museum’s permanent collection\, celebrating the recent completion of a large-scale reinstallation of these galleries. Films begin at sundown (approximately 8:00 p.m.) at the Botanical Lawn (east of the Museum.) \nWinner of seven Cesars from the French Academy\, this film paints the portrait of Séraphine Louis\, a devout and eccentric woman and self-taught painter. She was discovered working as a housekeeper by Wilhelm Uhde\, an art critic and gallerist famous for being an early collector of Picasso and Braque. Uhde admires the expressive power of Louis’s work\, convinced she was a genius of the Naïve art genre\, and comes to support her artistic endeavors. \nPanama 66’s Grab-n-Go will be open until 8:00 p.m. \n2 hours 5 minutes. This film is not rated\, but would be considered suitable for most audiences by current Motion Picture of America Association standards. \nFree \nPlease Note: Event may be cancelled due to inclement weather.\n\nImage Credit: IMDB.com
