The 2025 event celebrates art and architecture inspired by the groundbreaking architectural designs of Lord Norman Foster and his internationally renowned studio Foster + Partners. \nSee the Museum rotunda transform with a beautiful floral installation by 2025 Rotunda Designers Natasha Lisitsa and Daniel Schultz\, experience special art installations only on view during Art Alive\, and enjoy hands-on art-making and interactive activities designed for families and artists of all ages to do together in the Garden of Activities Saturday\, April 26 and Sunday\, April 27. \nArt Alive is The San Diego Museum of Art’s signature annual fundraiser\, providing essential support for the Museum’s exhibitions\, education\, outreach\, and public programs. Talented floral designers fill the galleries with fragrant arrangements inspired by the Museum collection\, offering a brilliantly colored backdrop for a weekend of beloved traditions and art-inspired activities. \n  \nPlease note that reserving your timed ticket is required. SUMMARY:Drawing Instruction in the Amazon: Artistic Creative Formation in the Mojos Region
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 16\n10:00 a.m.\nSpeakers: Verónica Muñoz-Nájar\, PhD\, Associate Curator of Art of the Spanish Americas\, the Thoma Foundation\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nJoin us as Dr. Muñoz-Nájar examines the fascinating intersection of art\, colonialism\, and cultural transformation in 18th-century Amazonia. The presentation explores how Spanish administrator Lázaro de Ribera established drawing schools in the Mojos region as a tool for both “civilizing” Indigenous populations and spurring economic development. \nThe lecture highlights the remarkable work of Indigenous artists including Heugene\, Avirá\, Guayacho\, Guacayane\, Noé\, and Hojeari\, who studied and reinterpreted European masters like Carracci\, Guercino\, and Le Brun. Through their drawings\, these artists created a unique visual language that both emulated European academic traditions and subtly subverted them\, embedding their own cultural perspectives and artistic agency. \nDr. Muñoz-Nájar will demonstrate how these works served as both a bridge and a boundary between colonial authority and Indigenous expression\, revealing how artistic education became a complex space where European aesthetics were simultaneously adopted\, transformed\, and reimagined within the context of Spain’s colonial project in the Americas. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which offers a platform for renowned scholars and experts from the art world to share their insights and knowledge on topics related to art history\, art theory\, and\nthe museum’s collections. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council.

At twenty-five\, author Benjamin Moser arrived in a Dutch town and became captivated by the country’s great museums\, finding in the lives and works of artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer a mirror to his own questions about art\, success\, and failure. The Upside-Down World is both a rich exploration of Holland’s Golden Age and an intimate self-portrait\, twenty years in the making.  \nCoffee and light snacks will be served. Marcy Sculpture Garden \n  \nJoin the SDMA Teen Council and Museum educators for a hands-on art workshop inspired by the designs of Persian ceramics from the Museum’s collection. In this drop-in activity\, participants will create their own painted tiles using paint pens while exploring the geometric and vegetal motifs found in 13th-century Persian pottery. \nThe SDMA Teen Council offers high school students the opportunity to engage collaboratively with Museum staff and peers\, contributing their voices to developing and implementing community-based art programs. \nThis event is open to all ages and skill levels. No reservation is required. All materials are provided. \n  \n Featured: Bowl\, Iran\, 13th century. Ceramic. Árboles’ performance piece draws directly from the themes of Women in Focus\, reimagining them through embodied gestures that speak to resilience\, sensuality\, and the multiplicity of womanhood. \nCome for the live performance\, stay for the full experience.
