SUMMARY:Exploring Sikh Legacy and the Impact of the India-Pakistan Partition
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 14\n2:00–5:00 p.m.\nMuseum Boardroom \nDuring the 15th century\, Sikh philosophy emerged as a reformist movement in India\, predominantly in the lands that became Pakistan in the partition of 1947. By the 19th century\, the Sikh kingdom established a strong secular formidable rule that the expanding British East India Company\, was stalled from further westward advances. In 1947\, with Indian independence…the British divided the country between India and Pakistan on religious demographics. \nAmardeep Singh is a child of the partition – his parents were uprooted from their homes that became Pakistan. Amardeep’s pioneering research serves as a link for posterity to an almost forgotten yet rich cultural legacy. \nAmardeep Singh\, author & photographer\, lives in Singapore. With an undergraduate degree in Engineering\, he pursued a Masters in Business Administration at the University of Chicago and was the Asia Pacific Regional Head for Revenue Management at American Express. He has passionately maintained pursuits in literary and creative arts as another facet of his personality. During his extensive travels through Pakistan\, Amardeep started documenting his explorations in a book\, Lost Heritage: The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan followed by a sequel in 2017 titled The Quest Continues: Lost Heritage: The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan. His two books are rich in photographs and story line. Autographed books will be available for purchase at $100/book. \n\nFree for CAIS members | $8 for SDMA members | $5 for Students | $10 for all others \nCAIS Members: for your complimentary ticket\, please contact 619-232-7931 by 2 p.m. on 4/13\, otherwise you will need to register at the door pending availability \nFor more information contact caissdma@gmail.com or call (619) 788-8577 or (858) 336-0404\nThis event is limited to 60 people\, so please register online ASAP to reserve your place \nThe presentation will be in two parts with a Q&A and discussion. \nSponsored by CAIS (Committee for the Arts of the Indian Subcontinent) \nFeatured: Image of Amardeep Singh from sangrurheritagelit.com/book-release-function/

SUMMARY:Real Life\, Ideal Life: Thomas Eakins\, Eastman Johnson\, and George Inness in the 1870s and 1880s
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series\n\nSpeaker: Robert L. Pincus\, Ph.D.\, Visiting Professor of Art History\, University of San Diego \nRobert Pincus will discuss the recurrent streak of idealism in 19th century American painting\, even when social forces might have led artists not to depict life in the uplifting manner they generally did. This view is clearly embodied in the paintings of major artists such as Eastman Johnson\, George Inness and Thomas Eakins. Johnson extolled the virtues of domesticity and community in such works as Woman Reading (circa 1874) and The Cranberry Harvest\, Island of Nantucket (1880) and Inness evoked the spirituality of the American landscape in Farm Landscape: Cattle in Pasture – Sunset Nantucket (circa 1883). Eakins paid homage to domestic life\, too\, in Elizabeth with a Dog (circa 1871)\, but moved American art toward realism – and a diminished sense of idealism – foreshadowing developments in 20th century American art. Pincus will look at these and other works by the three painters\, pointing to examples in the literature of the era as well. \nSee the full list of speakers for the 2017-18 Guest Lecture and Tour Series. \nThis lecture series focuses on works of art on view in the Museum and topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. \n\nTickets: $13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | $5 students\n\n\n\nFeatured: George Inness\, Farm Landscape\, Cattle in Pasture–Sunset Nantucket\, ca. 1883. Art represents not only culture and aesthetics but an investment for our future generations to perceive the journey of society through time.Due to the accelerated technological advances that we experience in this generation a rupture has emerged on what the unique experience of acquiring fine art used to be. It’s our goal to rekindle the relation between art and consumer\, to create not only a keen eye for quality art collections but an incomparable network to our wave of affordable luxury vision\, a legacy for those to come.

SUMMARY:The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art: Behind the Scenes of an Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series\n\nChange of Program  \nNote: Due to a scheduling conflict\, our originally scheduled speaker Dr. Sabiha Al Khemir will be unable to appear.  We are fortunate that Dr. Linda Komaroff has agreed to speak instead. \n\n\nSpeaker:  Linda Komaroff\, Ph.D\, Curator and Department Head\, Art of the Middle East\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art \nLinda Komaroff has served as LACMA’s curator of Islamic art since 1995. Her past exhibitions at LACMA include The Legacy of Genghis Khan: Courtly Art and Culture in Western Asia\, 1256–1353 (2003); A Tale of Two Persian Carpets (2009); and Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts (2011). The latter was the first major exhibition on Islamic art organized by an American institution to travel to the Middle East\, to the Museum of Islamic Art\, Doha (2012)\, where she was the guest curator. Her exhibition of highlights from LACMA’s permanent collection of Islamic art recently opened at the new King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran\, Saudi Arabia. Among her contemporary exhibitions are: Islamic Art Now: Contemporary Art of the Middle East\, Part 1 (2015) and Part 2 (2016). Combining historical and contemporary art\, her current exhibition for LACMA\, In the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art\, will open May 6\, 2018. \nShe is the author or editor of several books and exhibition catalogues\, and has written numerous articles and book chapters on various aspects of Islamic art with a special focus on Iran. She is the recipient of a number of grants for scholarly research\, including two Fulbright fellowships\, and Metropolitan Museum of Art and Getty fellowships\, while the Legacy of Genghis Khan exhibition catalogue received the Alfred H. Barr\, Jr. Award from the College Art Association and Gifts of the Sultan received the Annual Publication Prize for Outstanding Exhibition Catalogue from the Association of Art Museum Curators and the Twentieth World Prize for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She has taught at Hamilton College\, New York University\, and UCLA. She was closely involved with LACMA’s acquisition of the Madina Collection of Islamic Art in 2002\, which\, in combination with the museum’s existing collection of Islamic art\, gives Los Angeles one of the most significant collections worldwide; in 2006 she began to acquire and exhibit contemporary art of the Middle East\, placing LACMA’s collection at the forefront of American museums. \n\nIn the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art (May 6–September 9\, 2018) \nLACMA’s In the Fields of Empty Days is a groundbreaking exhibition of both historical and contemporary Iranian works that highlight ways in which artists have used and continue to use the past as a metaphor for the present day. This notion is revealed in art and literature in which ancient kings and heroes are used in later contexts as examples of virtue or as objects of derision\, while long-gone Shi‘ite saints are evoked as champions of the poor and the oppressed. This lecture will go behind the scenes to look at the concepts that shaped the exhibition; it will also consider how the exhibition may transform existing ideas about Iranian art. \nRead more about her exhibition here \n\n\n\nSee the full list of speakers for the 2017-18 Guest Lecture and Tour Series. \nThis lecture series focuses on works of art on view in the Museum and topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. \n\nTickets: $13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | $5 students\n\n\nImage: Siamak Filizadeh\, Anis al-Dawla\, 2014\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, purchased with funds provided by Kitzia and Richard Goodman through the 2016 Collectors Committee\, © Siamak Filizadeh\, photo © Museum Associates/LACMA
