DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 16\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: John Nava\, painter and tapestry designer \n  \nJoin us for a special guest lecture on the evolution of tapestry design. In 1999 John Nava won a major commission for the new cathedral in Los Angeles. This project led to the development of an innovative process combining traditional oil painting\, computer-derived digital images\, and modern electronic Jacquard weaving technology to make large-scale tapestries. Working closely with weavers in Belgium\, Nava has since produced more public tapestry projects including commissions for USC\, Princeton University\, and the University of San Diego. Additionally\, Nava has also utilized this digital weaving process to make gallery exhibition works addressing social justice issues. \nHear Nava share a survey of his work and his working practice in making tapestries today. \n  \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:How I curated the Exhibition of Ambassador & Mrs. E.F. Drumright’s Ink Diplomacy for the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 29\n1:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Ping-Hui Ku\, scholar\, San Diego Chinese Historical Museum (SDCHM) guest curator\, and Ambassador & Mrs. E.F. Drumright’s INK DIPLOMACY exhibition catalogue author \n  \nThis talk by Ping-Hui Ku will share details of how she curated the Ambassador & Mrs. E.F. Drumrights’ INK DIPLOMACY exhibition that is currently on display at the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum. Ping-Hui also authored an exhibition catalogue for the above-mentioned exhibition\, which includes 35 Chinese paintings\, all by 32 famous Chinese artists from mainland China to Taiwan since 1949. The artists gifted these treasures to the Drumrights during 1958 to 1962 and after\, and the works have not been on view to the public for 60 years. Ping-Hui’s research about the Drumright’s Life in INK began from studying the Chinese paintings in the SDMA collections since October 2013. \nPing-Hui is an independent scholar with extensive background in Chinese art. She has conducted independent research at The San Diego Museum of Art since 2013; studied Chinese landscapes for six years with Master Wu Yi\, the founder of The Association of Chinese Modern Art\, New York; and completed two years of field studies in China researching Buddhist art located at 12 grottoes. \nIn addition\, Ping-Hui has worked as a Systems Engineer at Bell Laboratories; a Manufacturing Engineer at Hewlett Packard Co.; and a Senior Industrial Engineer at General Instrument of Technology in Kaohsiung\, Taiwan. Her education background includes a Bachelor of Engineering\, Industrial Engineering from Chun Yuan Christian University\, Taiwan\, ROC; a Master of Management Science degree\, Quantitative Analysis\, from Stevens Institute of Technology\, Hoboken\, New Jersey; and studies in the Ph. She will discuss art trends\, teaching virtually\, today’s art student in an urban environment\, and outreach in the community. \nMs. Buckley is an artist\, writer\, and educator with an emphasis on art and social justice. She is an award-winning professor and the director of the School of Art + Design at San Diego State University. Her photo-collage and participatory art has been included in museum and gallery exhibitions\, and her writing about contemporary art is published widely\, including in Artforum International Magazine\, Art in America\, The Huffington Post\, and Los Angeles Review of Books\, where she is a contributing editor. Ms. Buckley is also the founder and director of Prison Arts Collective\, an initiative dedicated to expanding access to the arts to those are incarcerated.
