SUMMARY:The Fabled Silk Road: Travelers and Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 27\n1:00 p.m.\nMuseum Boardroom \nThe fabled Silk Road held vast treasures lying buried under the loess soil of the deserts  of China and central Eurasia until intrepid travelers from many lands\, risking unheard of dangers\, uncovered wonders.  During the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, numerous international expeditions of archaeologists\, art historians and adventurers found hidden cities\, temples and caves holding manuscripts\, sculptures\, utensils of everyday life and wall paintings which told\, to the delight of historians\, of life in a time hundreds of years earlier.  The competition between these groups which included British\, Germans\, French\, Japanese and Russians was fierce. Today museums around the world hold the treasures they discovered. \nHelen Anderson\, independent scholar\, intrepid traveler and former chairman of The San Diego Museum of Art’s Asian Arts Council will take us along the paths traveled by these men\, outlining the treasures they found. \nHelen Anderson was born in Virginia and educated there at Longwood College. She subsequently pursued her studies of Asian art over a period of 40 years while living In Taiwan\, Singapore\, Bangkok\, Iran and Hong Kong.  She has lectured in the National Palace Museum in Taipei\, the National Museum of Bangkok\, the Phoenix Art Museum\, the San Diego Museum of Art and the Chinese University of Hong Kong Museum of Art.  She was given visiting scholar privileges at the National Palace Museum in Taipei to study the ceramic collection there. Showcasing some of the best Persian art objects from the Museum’s permanent collection as well as twenty fine loan objects of the pre-Islamic time\, ranging from the Near Eastern (ca. 2500 BC) to the Sasanian era (224–651 AD) from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, this gallery illustrates a brief and yet profound development of Persian civilization and art in history and within today’s global context. \n  \nHistory of Persian Art collection and its gallery\nThe Museum’s collection of Persian art\, dating from the ninth to the twentieth centuries\, consists of close to two hundred items\, including a manuscript of Shahnama (the Epic of Iranian Kings) that was commissioned in India. The Persian art collection was built from around the 1950s to 1960s mainly through gifts as well as Museum purchases with funding from individuals and The Asiatic Arts Committees of the Fine Arts Society\, today’s Asian Arts Council (1959.3.a & 1958.33). Mrs. Irving T. Snyder (Caroline Stambaugh\, 1891–1974)\, one of the earliest and the most important donors of Persian art\, gifted at least fifty-three Asian art objects to the Museum\, including “Sweetmeat dish” (1964.131) and fritwares of the thirteenth century. Both Drs. Edwin Binney 3rd and Catherine Benkaim also gifted some Iranian objects (1971.72) in later decades. The establishment of a new gallery in 2017 provided a dedicated space to honor the Arts of Iran in San Diego\, a result of the collaborative efforts between the Museum’s leadership\, Dr. Marika Sardar\, the former Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art\, and the Persian Cultural Center and its community. Copley Auditorium \nSpeaker: John Myatt\, Reformed art forger\, artist\, and lecturer \nJohn Myatt was the artist involved in what Scotland Yard described as the greatest art fraud of the twentieth century. In 1975 when he was a supply teacher John’s wife left him and he had to give up teaching to look after two small children aged 3 and 1 1/2. Having once painted a Dufy for fun he put an advert in Private Eye magazine for Genuine Fakes from £120. One man kept on coming back for more paintings and nearly two years later John found out he had sold a Small French cubist painting for £25.000. John was offered either half of that in a brown envelope….. or his normal fee…… \nThe rest is history…….. \nHaving served a prison sentence\, much against his better judgement! John was persuaded to paint again. This talk will be illustrated with examples of John’s work legally undertaken over the last two decades. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world.
