He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Asiatic Society. \nDr. Elgood has been a Research Fellow at the Wallace Collection\, London. He is the author of seven books on arms and armor\, most recently the two volume The Rathores and their Armoury in Jodhpur Fort\, published in 2017.  He has cataloged numerous arms collections around the world\, and wrote the arms section to a catalog for the current exhibition at the Museum of Fine Art\, Houston\, called Peacock in the Desert. He has lectured at SOAS on the Asian Arts\, and at many of the major museums of Europe\, American\, the Arab world and India. SUMMARY:Art of Élan: Dreaming without Walls
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 15\n7:00 p.m.\n\nMuseum Rotunda\n\nArt of Élan’s commitment to collaboration and supporting new work continues this season with the commissioning of Tijuana-based composer and double-bassist Andrés Martín to write a work for NOW Ensemble (Art of Élan’s ensemble-in-residence). The piece will be premiered in both San Diego and Tijuana\, and is featured in this special closing concert at The San Diego Museum of Art\, alongside works by Sarah Kirkland Snider\, Ted Hearne\, and other composers affiliated with the NYC-based New Amsterdam Records. \n\n\nA native of Buenos Aires\, bassist\, arranger\, and composer Andrés Martín has performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles in Argentina\, Costa Rica\, Venezuela\, Brazil\, Mexico\, Denmark\, England\, Germany and United States. Since his arrival in Tijuana\, Andrés has been immersed in teaching as well as performing as a soloist and chamber musician. He is a member of the “Orquesta de Baja California” and “Cuatro para Tango”\, a chamber ensemble with whom he has released four recordings. He also organizes and directs “Contrabajos de Baja California A.C.\,” a Double Bass academy which hosts an international double bass festival and chamber music course in Tijuana every year. SUMMARY:The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art: Behind the Scenes of an Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series\n\nChange of Program  \nNote: Due to a scheduling conflict\, our originally scheduled speaker Dr. Sabiha Al Khemir will be unable to appear.  We are fortunate that Dr. Linda Komaroff has agreed to speak instead. \n\n\nSpeaker:  Linda Komaroff\, Ph.D\, Curator and Department Head\, Art of the Middle East\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art \nLinda Komaroff has served as LACMA’s curator of Islamic art since 1995. Her past exhibitions at LACMA include The Legacy of Genghis Khan: Courtly Art and Culture in Western Asia\, 1256–1353 (2003); A Tale of Two Persian Carpets (2009); and Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts (2011). The latter was the first major exhibition on Islamic art organized by an American institution to travel to the Middle East\, to the Museum of Islamic Art\, Doha (2012)\, where she was the guest curator. Her exhibition of highlights from LACMA’s permanent collection of Islamic art recently opened at the new King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran\, Saudi Arabia. Among her contemporary exhibitions are: Islamic Art Now: Contemporary Art of the Middle East\, Part 1 (2015) and Part 2 (2016). Combining historical and contemporary art\, her current exhibition for LACMA\, In the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art\, will open May 6\, 2018. \nShe is the author or editor of several books and exhibition catalogues\, and has written numerous articles and book chapters on various aspects of Islamic art with a special focus on Iran. She is the recipient of a number of grants for scholarly research\, including two Fulbright fellowships\, and Metropolitan Museum of Art and Getty fellowships\, while the Legacy of Genghis Khan exhibition catalogue received the Alfred H. Barr\, Jr. Award from the College Art Association and Gifts of the Sultan received the Annual Publication Prize for Outstanding Exhibition Catalogue from the Association of Art Museum Curators and the Twentieth World Prize for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She has taught at Hamilton College\, New York University\, and UCLA. She was closely involved with LACMA’s acquisition of the Madina Collection of Islamic Art in 2002\, which\, in combination with the museum’s existing collection of Islamic art\, gives Los Angeles one of the most significant collections worldwide; in 2006 she began to acquire and exhibit contemporary art of the Middle East\, placing LACMA’s collection at the forefront of American museums. \n\nIn the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art (May 6–September 9\, 2018) \nLACMA’s In the Fields of Empty Days is a groundbreaking exhibition of both historical and contemporary Iranian works that highlight ways in which artists have used and continue to use the past as a metaphor for the present day. This notion is revealed in art and literature in which ancient kings and heroes are used in later contexts as examples of virtue or as objects of derision\, while long-gone Shi‘ite saints are evoked as champions of the poor and the oppressed. Check here for details.\n\n\nDr. Ana Paulina Gámez  will speak on Mexico’s iconic textile – the rebozo – a powerful symbol of Mexican culture and identity. Its surprising Arabic origin and history will surprise and delight you. \nThe Mexican Revolution of 1910 brought the rebozo global notoriety as the garment of choice for the “Adelitas\,” rebel women who used it to carry both babies and weapons wrapped inside past government checkpoints. \nWomen of all socioeconomic classes have worn this garment celebrating births\, weddings and even as a death shroud. Famous artists and First Ladies of Mexico favored them such as Frida Kahlo\, Maria Felix\, and even the Empress Carlota. The rebozo became a sign of modesty and ostentation and a symbol in Mexican literature and cinema. \nPlease join us for a lecture detailing the fascinating history\, many uses\, and evolution of this culturally significant garment. \nWear your favorite rebozo! Join us after the lecture for light refreshments. \n\nDr. Ana Paulina Gámez received her Ph.D. in Art History from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)\, where she also currently teaches art. On two occasions\, she has been a scholarship recipient by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain to teach the course “Sources of Viceregal Art”. \nAs a specialist in Decorative Arts\, Popular Arts\, and Design\, Dr. Gámez has curated and consulted for multiple exhibitions in Mexico and the United States. She has presented various art courses and conferences\, and has published several books\, articles and essays in the United States\, Spain\, and Mexico.  She has been a curator for the Franz Meyer Museum and also resident curator for the National Museum of Art in Mexico City\, where she was in charge of the Viceregal and Popular Art collections. \nCurrently\, Dr. Gámez is an advisor to the Banamex Cultural Foundation\, as well as to the National Foundation for the Promotion of Handicrafts.  She is an active member of the Academic Councils of the Textile Center of the Mayan World and the Arocena Museum. \n\nThis event is sponsored by the Latin American Arts Council \n$5 LAAC members and students | $10 SDMA members | $15 nonmembers

The symposium will be moderated by Dr. Sabiha al-Khemir\, founding director of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha\, Qatar. \n\n$7.50 members and students | $12.50 seniors and military | $15 nonmembers | FREE for CAIS members\n(CAIS members: Please contact Angela Wills Talbott awills@sdmart.org or 619-696-1935) \nTicket includes admission to the Museum on the day of the Symposium. \nCoffee and pastries will be served in the morning and there will be one intermission. \n\nBuy Symposium Tickets \n\nSabiha al-Khemir\, Ph.D (Moderator) \nSabiha is a Tunisian writer\, illustrator\, and expert in Islamic art\, whose work is concerned with cultural bridging and cultural dialogues. She is fluent in and lectures internationally in English\, Arabic and French in addition to speaking Italian and Spanish\, with her multifaceted approach being widely recognized. She is known for using themes relating to the metropolitan location and identity in her literature and art. \nAs the founding director of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha\, Qatar\, Sabiha has been recognized for her vision in establishing a program for the museum that emphasizes the contextual place of the art as well as the educational program that began well before the museum was officially opened. She was also effective in making the collection grow with the acquisition of a number of unique works of art. \n\nMarika Sardar\, Ph.D (Catalog contributor) \nMarika received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts\, NYU (2007) with a dissertation on Deccani architecture. She has served as the Curator for South Asia at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha since 2016. Marika was formerly the Associate Curator of Southern Asian and Islamic Art at The San Diego Museum of Art where she curated Epic Tales from Ancient India.  The exhibition traveled to the Princeton University Art Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art prior to opening at The San Diego Museum of Art on June 9.  She worked for six years in the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, where she was involved with the reinstallation of 15 galleries for Islamic art (2011) and the exhibition\, The Interwoven Globe: Worldwide Textile Trade\, 1500–1800 (2013). \nPublications include essays on the architectural\, textile\, and painting traditions of the Deccan; on the Metropolitan Museum’s excavations at Nishapur\, Iran; and on Safavid and Ottoman textiles. She has also written the section on South Asian art for the textbook Asian Art (2014)\, co-edited\, with Navina Haidar\, the volume Arts of India’s Deccan Courts\, 1323-1687 (2011). They also co-wrote Sultans of Deccan India\, 1500-1700: Opulence and Fantasy\, the exhibition catalog for the 2015 exhibition of the same name at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Marika wrote chapters on The Bahmanis and their Artistic Legacy\, The Courtly Tradition of Kalamkaris and Burhanpur and Aurangabad. \n\nQamar Adamjee\, Ph.D (Catalog contributor) \nQamar Adamjee is Malavalli Family Foundation Associate Curator of Art of the Indian Subcontinent at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco (since 2009). Prior to that\, she worked for nearly nine years at the department of Islamic at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Qamar received her Ph.D in 2011 at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts\, writing her dissertation on the visual narrative strategies in an illustrated Indian Sufi romance. \nProjects at the Asian Art Museum have included exhibitions of varying scale on topics as diverse as Islamic textiles\, Hindu and Sikh art\, colonial-period photography\, painting\, and prints\, Indian paintings and sculpture. Her recent project\, Divine Bodies: Sacred Imagery in Asian Art (2018) has experimented with crossing disciplinary boundaries to present Hindu and Buddhist religious art in fresh ways. Qamar has been in-house curator for several traveling exhibitions\, including Yoga: The Art of Transformation (Freer Sackler)\, Pearls on a String: Artists\, Poets\, and Patrons at the Great Islamic Courts (Walters Art Museum)\, Cyrus Cylinder and Ancient Persia (Freer Sackler)\, and Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts (V&A). \n\nAlka Patel\, Ph.D (Catalog contributor) \nAlka Patel’s research focuses on the visual traditions and material culture of South Asia\, primarily the architecture of India and Pakistan dating to the 12th through 16th centuries. Her work has benefited from current scholarship rethinking the rigidity of religious categorizations of South Asian material culture such as “Hindu\,” “Jaina” and “Islamic\,” inherited from a Colonial-period epistemology. Her publications have demonstrated that the 12th-16th-century buildings of South Asia transcend the historically inaccurate identifications imposed on them. \nShe has the singular opportunity to expand her regional and chronological expertise in a collaborative project with Dr. Karen Leonard (Professor of Anthropology\, UCI)\, titled Building New Identities in the Diaspora: the Banking and Mercantile Communities of Hyderbad\, India\, 1730-1940. The project will focus on the changing regional\, caste\, and religious identities of mercantile and banker castes from Gujarat\, Rajasthan and other areas of northern India as they migrated to the Deccan. Their work will reveal the specific translations of imported architectural practices in their new context\, documenting many buildings in Hyderabad for the first time. Their combined expertise in architectural and social history will elucidate the historical extent of trans-regional networks throughout India and the mobility and adaptability of architectural and social practices. \n\nDaniel Ehnbom\, Ph.D \nAssociate Professor Daniel Ehnbom has taught South Asian art at the University of Virginia since 1992\, and has served as the Director of the Center for South Asian Studies since 1997. He received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin\, Madison\, and received both his M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from the University of Chicago. He has done extensive field research in India and Pakistan. He has published several articles in South Asian Archaeology\, as well as entries on South Asian art for the Grove Dictionary of Art (1996)\, for which he was South Asia Editor for Painting and Sculpture. Prof. Ehnbom’s publications\, including Indian Miniatures: The Ehrenfeld Collection as well as seminars he has recently taught reflect his strong\, continuing interest in the manuscript painting of India and in early Indian sculpture. His research interests include devotional sculptures and painting illustrating the Krishna theme\, and votive plaques produced in Mathura\, ca. 1st and ¬2nd centuries A.D. \n\nFeatured: Krishna returns to Dwarka after killing the murderer of his father-in-law\, ca. 1800. Its surprising Arabic origin and history will surprise and delight you. \n\nThe Mexican Revolution of 1910 brought the rebozo global notoriety as the garment of choice for the “Adelitas\,” rebel women who used it to carry both babies and weapons wrapped inside past government checkpoints. \nWomen of all socioeconomic classes have worn this garment celebrating births\, weddings and even as a death shroud. Famous artists and First Ladies of Mexico favored them such as Frida Kahlo\, Maria Felix\, and even the Empress Carlota. The rebozo became a sign of modesty and ostentation and a symbol in Mexican literature and cinema. \nPlease join us for a lecture detailing the fascinating history\, many uses\, and evolution of this culturally significant garment. \nWear your favorite rebozo! SUMMARY:Epic Tales - Guided Tour by Marika Sardar
DESCRIPTION:Join Marika Sardar\, Ph.D\, Curator for South Asia at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha\, for a private guided tour of the Epic Tales from Ancient India exhibition. This tour will meet in the Rotunda at 10.30 a.m.\, starting with a 15 minute introduction followed by a 45-60 minute tour. This tour is limited to 25 participants. \nSponsored by the Committee for the Arts of the Indian Subcontinent \nFree for CAIS Members | $10 Museum members | $15 nonmembers | $5 Students \nMarika Sardar\, Ph.D (Catalog contributor) \nMarika received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts\, NYU (2007) with a dissertation on Deccani architecture. She has served as the Curator for South Asia at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha since 2016. Marika was formerly the Associate Curator of Southern Asian and Islamic Art at The San Diego Museum of Art where she curated Epic Tales from Ancient India.  The exhibition traveled to the Princeton University Art Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art prior to opening at The San Diego Museum of Art on June 9. She worked for six years in the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, where she was involved with the reinstallation of 15 galleries for Islamic art (2011) and the exhibition\, The Interwoven Globe: Worldwide Textile Trade\, 1500–1800 (2013). \nPublications include essays on the architectural\, textile\, and painting traditions of the Deccan; on the Metropolitan Museum’s excavations at Nishapur\, Iran; and on Safavid and Ottoman textiles. She has also written the section on South Asian art for the textbook Asian Art (2014)\, co-edited\, with Navina Haidar\, the volume Arts of India’s Deccan Courts\, 1323-1687 (2011). They also co-wrote Sultans of Deccan India\, 1500-1700: Opulence and Fantasy\, the exhibition catalog for the 2015 exhibition of the same name at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Marika wrote chapters on The Bahmanis and their Artistic Legacy\, The Courtly Tradition of Kalamkaris and Burhanpur and Aurangabad.
