SUMMARY:SDMA+ Cami Árboles: The Body as the Frame
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 7\n7:00–10:00 p.m.\nMOPA@SDMA Atrium \n  \nJoin Cami Árboles for a night of art\, music\, and dance! \nEnjoy a night of art and dancing fueled by the artistry of Los Angeles-based artist Cami Árboles and inspired by current exhibition Women in Focus. This powerful exhibition demonstrates the pivotal role women have played in photography since its invention in the 1830s\, showcasing diverse perspectives on identity\, autonomy\, and representation. \nThe night will feature a captivating performance that brings together yoga\, flexibility\, and dance combined with opera singing to showcase the power and versatility of the female form. Árboles’ performance piece draws directly from the themes of Women in Focus\, reimagining them through embodied gestures that speak to resilience\, sensuality\, and the multiplicity of womanhood. \nCome for the live performance\, stay for the full experience. Enjoy a drink from the cash bar\, take a stroll through the exhibition\, and stay to dance and let loose with music by DJs. \n  \nCami Árboles is a multidisciplinary artist and movement educator born and raised in Los Angeles. She is a graduate of Yale University\, where she studied and trained extensively in classical voice\, opera\, and live performance. Her background in vocal performance and physical theater deeply informs her current work\, which explores the body as a site of ritual\, resistance\, and transformation. Árboles is the founder of Mind Body Spirit Collective (MBSC)\, an international movement platform centering pole dance\, yoga\, and somatic healing through community. Cami draws from diverse disciplines to create immersive\, embodied experiences about womanhood and the female form. \n  \n$35 Members and Students | $45 Nonmembers \nSave My Spot \nThis is an 18+ event. SUMMARY:Vow Icons for Daigoji: Imperial Guardians on a Sacred Mountaintop
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 31\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Rachel Quist\, PhD\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Case Western Reserve University\nVirtual Event \n  \nIn 907\, a group of eight Buddhist icons was commissioned for Daigoji\, a temple atop Mount Kasatori in Kyoto\, following an imperial decree from Emperor Daigo. This lecture examines how these sculptures—a triad of the Medicine Buddha (Yakushi Nyorai) with two attendants and a pentad of the Five Great Wisdom Kings (Godai Myōō)—functioned as agents of ritual protection for the emperor\, drawing on longstanding ties between these deities\, sacred mountains\, and healing waters. Drawing on temple records\, ritual precedents\, and imperial diaries\, Dr. Rachel Quist explores how Daigo’s bond with Daigoji shaped both his legacy and the political-religious landscape of his reign. \nSpeaker bio: Dr. Rachel Quist is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Case Western Reserve University\, whose research focuses on Japanese Buddhist visual culture. She investigates the interactions between Buddhist icons\, their worshipers\, and their natural environs. Her first manuscript project examines visual culture at Daigoji\, illuminating the centrality of sculptural icons within the complex interplay of medicinal rituals\, imperial politics\, and the cosmic worldview of premodern Japan. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nSave your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link via confirmation email with instructions once you secure your place.\n \nSave my spot!\n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Yakushi Nyorai triad (detail)\, Daigoji Reihōkan Museum\, Daigoji\, Kyoto
