SUMMARY:Abstract Prints by Hagiwara Hideo
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 25\n1:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Andreas Marks\, Ph.D.\, ​Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese and Korean Art and Director of the Clark Center at the Minneapolis Institute of Art \n  \nOriginally a painter trained in oil\, Hagiwara Hideo (1913-2007) turned to printmaking in 1954. From the start his prints were of an abstract nature\, and for 50 years he was a constant innovator in his choice of motifs\, style and technique. With an oeuvre of over 600 different prints\, this lecture provides an introduction into the life and works of Hagiwara Hideo. It is held in connection with the first major U.S. retrospective exhibition of Hagiwara’s prints at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. \nAndreas Marks studied East Asian Art History at the University of Bonn and obtained his Ph.D. in Japanese Studies from Leiden University with a thesis on nineteenth century actor prints. From 2008 to 2013 he was director and chief curator of the Clark Center for Japanese Art in Hanford\, California\, and since 2013 has been Mary Griggs Burke Curator and Head of the Japanese and Korean Art Department at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He is the author of TASCHEN’s “Hiroshige & Eisen: The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaido” and “Japanese Woodblock Prints (1680–1938)”. Behl\, art historian and documentarian\, on a journey through Indian art and culture and its influences across Asia. During this 5-day mini course\, lectures will be profusely illustrated by Behl’s well-known photographs and films\, including scarcely seen ancient murals. He will discuss the continuity of the tradition of painting in India\, the Indian pantheon and its epics\, and the magnificence of Chola bronzes\, among many other artistic aspects of the region. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 16\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: John Nava\, painter and tapestry designer \n  \nJoin us for a special guest lecture on the evolution of tapestry design. In 1999 John Nava won a major commission for the new cathedral in Los Angeles. This project led to the development of an innovative process combining traditional oil painting\, computer-derived digital images\, and modern electronic Jacquard weaving technology to make large-scale tapestries. Working closely with weavers in Belgium\, Nava has since produced more public tapestry projects including commissions for USC\, Princeton University\, and the University of San Diego. Additionally\, Nava has also utilized this digital weaving process to make gallery exhibition works addressing social justice issues. \nHear Nava share a survey of his work and his working practice in making tapestries today. \n  \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link.
