SUMMARY:The Importance of Being Empress: Race\, Labor\, and Ornamental Indians
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 10\n10:00 a.m.–noon p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Dr. Siddhartha Shah\, Director of Education and Civic Engagement\, and the Curator of South Asian Art at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem\, Massachusetts \n  \nAt her home on the Isle of Wight\, Queen Victoria constructed a miniaturized and domesticated India over which she reigned as Empress. She commissioned an elaborate Durbar Room inspired by the grand meeting halls of Mughal India\, filled a corridor with nearly one hundred paintings of Indian heads\, and further outfitted her home with a staff of Indian men who breathed life into her most outrageous imperial fantasies. Dr. Shah’s research centers on portraits and public spectacles preserved in Queen Victoria’s personal photo albums. The manner in which the Queen displayed her Indians exposes striking parallels with slave portraits of the 16th-18th centuries. As such\, his study positions Victoria’s self-fashioning as Empress of India within a centuries-old convention of displaying black and brown servants and slaves to fulfill contrasting social and chromatic effects—Indian people as decorative props\, arranged in a symbolic and picturesque power play of light and dark\, domination\, and subordination. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. I often do this through my art\, as it is a form of self-expression. My art can act as a way to get messages across or to blow off steam. Art is essential to my queer experiences and has helped get me through a handful of events. \nNico Standifer\nMy name is Nico Standifer. My pronouns are he/him. I am 17 years old. I love dogs\, the beach\, and hanging out with friends. I also love to draw and my favorite medium is digital art. \nVanessa Dubois\nHi\, my name is Vanessa Dubois. Art has always been part of my life\, specifically drawing and painting\, and I have always been interested in photography. I am a complete self-taught photographer\, and my art is improving with every picture I take. My focus is event photography with an emphasis on drag queens. I love movements\, lights\, and capturing memories. \nI grew up in France\, and\, shortly after moving to California\, I had my own coming out moment. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 24\n1:00–2:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Tiffany Beres \n  \nWhat is “Chinese” photography? China boasts a history of art stretching over five thousand years\, which embraces a vast array of forms\, from carved jade stones to ink paintings on silk or paper. The Chinese experience of photography also stands apart from that of other countries. Since the introduction of the photographic medium to China in the late 1840s\, Chinese photographers have adapted this foreign technology and grafted it onto more traditional Chinese forms of artistic expression. Ms. Beres will present an introduction to the history of Chinese photography\, focusing on the innovations of the early Chinese photographer Lang Jingshan and introducing eight contemporary neo-traditionalist artists explore the possibility of transformation of the Chinese aesthetic tradition within a postmodern context. Art Alive returns for its 40th year as San Diego’s quintessential celebration of art\, florals\, and community. Enjoy early access to see spectacular floral interpretations of nearly 100 works of art throughout the Museum and be among the first to see two new major exhibitions. \nCranach to Canaletto: The Bemberg Foundation brings stunning European works of art ranging from Venetian portraits and view paintings to masterworks of the German and French Renaissance to the US for the first time. Organized by the Bemberg Foundation\, based at the historic Hôtel d’Assézat in Toulouse\, the exhibition features more than 75 works produced between about 1500 and 1800. Artists represented in the Foundation’s collection include the Venetian painters Tintoretto\, Titian\, Veronese\, Canaletto\, Tiepolo and Longhi; French artists Clouet\, Nattier\, Boucher\, and Vigée-Lebrun; and Flemish and Dutch painters Brueghel\, Van Goyen\, and Van Dyck. Five Lucas Cranach paintings attest to Bemberg’s appreciation of this seminal figure of the German Renaissance. The exhibition is divided into sections exploring themes of portraiture\, landscape\, mythology\, and domestic environments (which is subdivided into “Outdoor Pursuits” and “Interiors and Intrigue”). Along the way\, issues of perceived beauty\, romance\, realism\, and faith are considered. \nEverything You See Could Be A Lie: Photorealistic Drawings by Ana de Alvear shares the hauntingly beautiful hyper-realistic drawings of Ana de Alvear\, a multidisciplinary\, Madrid-based artist whose works of art play with the equivocation between reality and its representation. The solo exhibition features more than 20 works of art executed in colored pencil\, including two extraordinary\, large-scale murals. The hyper-realistic drawings are created in response to traditional still life paintings in Europe and the U.S. and invite viewers to look deeper. \nMembers also get to vote for their favorite interpretations in the floral exhibition—choosing a set of Members Choice winners on both Friday and Saturday—and see the sights\, scents\, and sounds of Art Alive spill onto the plaza for the new\, family-friendly Open Air Floral Affair. \nArt Alive 2021 and the two new exhibitions\, Cranach to Canaletto: The Bemberg Foundation and Everything You See Could Be A Lie: Photorealistic Drawings by Ana de Alvear\, open to the public at 10:00 a.m. Timed tickets are required. \nNot a member?
