SUMMARY:The Multiple Cultural Worlds of Raja Ravi Varma (POSTPONED)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 28\n10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.\nMuseum Boardroom \nEvent postponed. Due to the ANNUAL AIDS Walk & Run event scheduled on September 28\, we expect road closures in the Balboa Park Area which will cause major challenges in parking and accessing the Museum for this event. The program has been postponed to a later date to be determined. \nRaja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) is one of the greatest painters in the history of Indian art and the pioneer of “modern” Indian art. His work\, which fuses European techniques with Indian subjects\, was known and coveted world-wide\, and he was notable also for making his art available to the public through affordable lithographs. Sushumna Kannan\, adjunct faculty at San Diego State University\, discusses the life and art of Raja Ravi Varma. \nFree SAAC members | $10 Museum members | $15 nonmembers | $5 students \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Hockney
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 4\n8:00 p.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nComplementing the Museum’s installation of David Hockney’s The Valley (Mountains in Var\, near La Garde Freinet)*\, Hockney presents a fascinating dive into the life\, loves\, and career of one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists. From his early beginnings in working-class West Yorkshire to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood in the 1960s and 70s\, Hockney has consistently defied the labels—“pop art\,” “queer art\,” “figurative art\,”—imposed upon him and has created a remarkable body of work spanning painting\, photographic collage\, and even theater and set design. Hockney utilizes interviews\, personal photographs\, and home movies to offer a deeply personal look at the artist’s remarkable life. 2014\, Not Rated\, 112 min. Please note this film contains strong language and nudity. \n*? UPDATE Due to unforeseen circumstances\, David Hockney’s The Valley (Mountains in Var\, near La Garde Freinet) is now on view through September 24 only\, and will no longer be on display through October 28 as originally advertised. Ticket holders can show their film screening tickets for Hockney now through September 24\, 2019 for free admission into the Museum to see the painting before it leaves our galleries. \nShow your film screening ticket for free same-day Museum admission during Art After Hours from 5:00–8:00 p.m. \n$5 members and students | $7.50 seniors and military | $10 nonmembers

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 9\nNoon-5:00 p.m. \nBouguereau & America opens to the public at noon on November 9. \nWidely embraced by American collectors of the 19th century\, William-Adolphe Bouguereau was once anointed the standard-bearer of cultural achievement throughout Europe. But by the 20th century\, he was scorned by modernist critics and relegated to a footnote in art history where he remained for over a century. Comprising nearly 40 masterful paintings\, Bouguereau & America will bring together many of the artist’s most important works with a fresh look into how collecting Bouguereau’s work reflects the lifestyles of American collectors in the late 19th through early 20th centuries. \nMembers receive early access to the exhibition at our Members’ Preview from 10:00 a.m.–noon on November 9. \nNot a member? Join today.
