It represents both established and emerging artists\, offering exhibitions and opening horizons for local and international artistic production. \nBeliz Iristay—TURKMEX Studio\, Guadalupe Valley: Experience the work of Beliz Iristay\, a visual artist working on both sides of the United States and Mexico border region. Her artwork is a representation of the identity created in the in-between spaces. Iristay creates installation work that critically examines the traditions in the cultures she has experienced\, specifically as they relate to tradition\, identity\, gender\, and custom. \n  \nEnjoy wine tasting and lunch at Monte Xanic Winery. \nMonte Xanic was founded in 1987 by Eric\, Hans\, Manuel\, Ricardo and Tomás\, all great lovers of good wine and with a common dream: to create quality Mexican wines that would position Mexico on the international oenology map. “Our passion\, devotion and attention to detail have earned us the recognition as the best wine in Mexico\, and that fills us with unquestionable pride.” This elegant wine tasting experience and charcuterie is included in your ticket price. \n  \nImportant note: All attendees must bring their passport to cross the border. The presentation will focus on how the ancient land route was opened; who moved valuable Chinese silk\, spices\, and jade to the West; and how China received powerful horses\, gold\, silver\, ivory\, and glass products. Roman wealth and power pushed the Silk Road to flourish while the Chinese military controlled the corridors to central Asia\, and the commercial acumen of the Central Asians connected the East and West.  \nSpeaker Bio: Lily Birmingham has been a docent at The San Diego Museum of Art since 2011 and worked as the docent training chair for four years to plan and execute the docent training program. A longtime member of the Asian Arts Council\, Lily has served as AAC chair and is the current Study Group chair. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 31\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Rachel Quist\, PhD\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Case Western Reserve University\nVirtual Event \n  \nIn 907\, a group of eight Buddhist icons was commissioned for Daigoji\, a temple atop Mount Kasatori in Kyoto\, following an imperial decree from Emperor Daigo. This lecture examines how these sculptures—a triad of the Medicine Buddha (Yakushi Nyorai) with two attendants and a pentad of the Five Great Wisdom Kings (Godai Myōō)—functioned as agents of ritual protection for the emperor\, drawing on longstanding ties between these deities\, sacred mountains\, and healing waters. She investigates the interactions between Buddhist icons\, their worshipers\, and their natural environs.
