SUMMARY:Real Life\, Ideal Life: Thomas Eakins\, Eastman Johnson\, and George Inness in the 1870s and 1880s
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series\n\nSpeaker: Robert L. Pincus\, Ph.D.\, Visiting Professor of Art History\, University of San Diego \nRobert Pincus will discuss the recurrent streak of idealism in 19th century American painting\, even when social forces might have led artists not to depict life in the uplifting manner they generally did. This view is clearly embodied in the paintings of major artists such as Eastman Johnson\, George Inness and Thomas Eakins. Johnson extolled the virtues of domesticity and community in such works as Woman Reading (circa 1874) and The Cranberry Harvest\, Island of Nantucket (1880) and Inness evoked the spirituality of the American landscape in Farm Landscape: Cattle in Pasture – Sunset Nantucket (circa 1883). Eakins paid homage to domestic life\, too\, in Elizabeth with a Dog (circa 1871)\, but moved American art toward realism – and a diminished sense of idealism – foreshadowing developments in 20th century American art. Pincus will look at these and other works by the three painters\, pointing to examples in the literature of the era as well. \nSee the full list of speakers for the 2017-18 Guest Lecture and Tour Series. \nThis lecture series focuses on works of art on view in the Museum and topics of interest in the broader art world. SUMMARY:Exploring Sikh Legacy and the Impact of the India-Pakistan Partition
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 14\n2:00–5:00 p.m.\nMuseum Boardroom \nDuring the 15th century\, Sikh philosophy emerged as a reformist movement in India\, predominantly in the lands that became Pakistan in the partition of 1947. By the 19th century\, the Sikh kingdom established a strong secular formidable rule that the expanding British East India Company\, was stalled from further westward advances. In 1947\, with Indian independence…the British divided the country between India and Pakistan on religious demographics. \nAmardeep Singh is a child of the partition – his parents were uprooted from their homes that became Pakistan. Amardeep’s pioneering research serves as a link for posterity to an almost forgotten yet rich cultural legacy. \nAmardeep Singh\, author & photographer\, lives in Singapore. With an undergraduate degree in Engineering\, he pursued a Masters in Business Administration at the University of Chicago and was the Asia Pacific Regional Head for Revenue Management at American Express. He has passionately maintained pursuits in literary and creative arts as another facet of his personality. During his extensive travels through Pakistan\, Amardeep started documenting his explorations in a book\, Lost Heritage: The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan followed by a sequel in 2017 titled The Quest Continues: Lost Heritage: The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan. His two books are rich in photographs and story line. In the courses students learn from arts professionals and discover what goes on behind-the-scenes in local museums and arts organizations. Artists can learn to present and promote their work and get connected with the San Diego art scene. \nProfessor Alessandra Moctezuma has an extensive background working as an artist\, as a founder of arts collectives\, as a public arts manager\, and as a curator. Working in arts organizations\, Professor Moctezuma learned many skills that were not taught in art school or studio art classes. DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series\n\nAndrew J. Walker will speak on the celebrity of the painting Eve of Saint John by Peter Hurd\, which is at once a portrait and a landscape. Walker examines both how and why Hurd chose the subject and how\, as an artist removed from the New York art scene\, he was able to extend his influence to reinforce the importance of realistic figure painting. \nAndrew J. Walker\, PhD\, has served as Executive Director of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art since 2011. His previous work experience includes the Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs and Curator of American Art at the Saint Louis Art museum. He has held curatorial positions at the Missouri History Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago\, and he received his doctorate in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania. \nDuring his now seven year tenure at the Amon Carter\, Andrew has effectively led major changes in both the internal and external operations of the museum.  This has included directing a new collections plan that embraces in a sustainable way the creative work of living artists\, the development of world class exhibitions\, the expansion of the museum to an international platform\, and the re-conceptualization of the museum as a critical site for experiences across the broad spectrum of the guests who visit.  The vision for the museum in this time and this environment captures the work: the Amon Carter Museum is the place to experience the wonder of American Art. \n\nSee the full list of speakers for the 2017-18 Guest Lecture and Tour Series. \nThis lecture series focuses on works of art on view in the Museum and topics of interest in the broader art world. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 3\n10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. \nThe artists: \nVivien Ressler comes to San Diego by way of Cuba\, Miami\, Venezuela and New York City.  As a child\, she began using images and drawings to communicate before she learned to speak English. Her art education included interior design school in Venezuela; a B.A. from Hunter College in New York\, with a dual major in education and fine arts; the Arts Students League; and The National Academy of Fine Arts. \nPat McNabb Martin is an accomplished art educator\, filmmaker\, graphic designer and manufacturer/designer of hand painted women’s clothing and accessories.  For 18 years she designed and built single family homes on spec in Southern California\, where she currently resides.  In 2002\, Pat returned to painting full time. Martin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois in Urbana and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Art Institute of Chicago. \nAnne Abendroth took her first floor loom class in the 1970s and never looked back. The complexity of planning\, threading\, and weaving on the machine was too tempting\, and is still intriguing and exciting to her\, to explore an ancient craft with new materials\, contemporary looms\, and computers. About 15 years ago\, Anne considered giving up weaving and fibers. Abstract art called to her. Those huge canvases of the Abstract Impressionists and that free flowing paint sounded like such a challenge and downright fun. But with a room full of looms\, she hated to throw out 30 years of weaving knowledge.
