SUMMARY:Legacy of Ceylon: Art & Photography of Sri Lanka
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 25\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Dr. Janet Baker\, Curator of Asian Art\, Phoenix Art Museum\nVirtual Event \n  \nDiscover the island nation of Sri Lanka\, formerly known as Ceylon\, which lies off the southeast coat of India\, placing it along strategic sea routes of trade between Asia and Europe. Explore the legacy of Ceylon based on surviving artifacts\, Buddhism found a home in Sri Lanka from its place of origin in northwest India around the 5-6th century\, and the faith’s oldest traditions remain intact on the island today. Over the centuries\, various ruling families created a theocracy\, a government of officials who ruled by divine guidance. Beginning in the late 16th century\, the island entered a long period of colonial rule; first colonized by the Portuguese in 1597\, followed by the Dutch in 1640 and the British in 1815. The British largely supported the Buddhist theocracy maintained under the indigenous kings of Kandy\, the last monarchy to rule Ceylon from 1597 to 1815. Ceylon finally achieved independence in 1948\, and a period of insurrection and civil war followed. In 1972\, a constitution and a republic were established\, which led to the naming of a new nation\, Sri Lanka.\n  \nLegacy of Ceylon: Art & Photography of Sri Lanka presents a wide range of works that explore painting and sculpture featuring a distinctive combination of Indian and Southeast Asian artistic styles and iconography. Works from the colonial period are embellished with motifs from Portugal\, Holland\, and Britain. By the 18th century\, the concept of divine kingship had reached its apex. Solid bronze-casting techniques were used to create large-scale works that expressed the elegance and perfection in sculpted form of the enlightened spirit of the Buddha. Many of the works discussed had never been on public view prior to the exhibition of this same title at Phoenix Art Museum in 2021-22. Legacy of Ceylon: Art and Photography of Sri Lanka also features original black-and-white photographs by Dr. Quintus Fernando (1926-2004)\, who explored his native home of Sri Lanka in the 1950s with a Mamiya-flex camera and black-and-white film. His keen eye captured serene and exuberant moments of the island’s people\, landscapes\, Buddhist ruins\, and everyday life\, with a particular focus on the nation’s tropical sea and fertile fields. The timeless quality of these images reflect a historic moment between the end of colonial rule and the beginning of a new nation.\n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nSave your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link via confirmation email with instructions once you secure your place. Space is limited. \n  \nSave my spot!\n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Quintus Fernando\, Morning Launch 2\, circa 1950s. Black and white photograph. SUMMARY:The Art and Activism of Chicana Muralist Judith Baca
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 16\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Alessandra Moctezuma\, Gallery Director and Professor of Fine Art at San Diego Mesa College\nVirtual Event \n  \nJoin the virtual Larry Baza Memorial Lecture with Alessandra Moctezuma\, Gallery Director and Professor of Fine Art at San Diego Mesa College\, as she shares about Judith Baca\, a Chicana artist\, pioneer of muralism as community art\, and 2023 recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Baca’s “Great Wall of Los Angeles” spans half a mile of the Tujunga wash in the San Fernando Valley and exists as a visual testimony to the diverse histories and struggles of the people that have made California. \nBaca learned from Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros that art is a radical tool. As painting assistant for the “World Wall” murals\, Alessandra Moctezuma learned from Baca about creating change through art. In 2021\, Moctezuma curated “Memorias de Nuestra Tierra\,” a retrospective of Judith Baca for the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach.  In this talk\, Moctezuma will cover the most salient artworks by Baca and provide personal insights from knowing the artist and her trajectory for three decades. \n  \nSave your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \n  \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \n  \nFeatured: Judith Baca and Alessandra Moctezuma in front of the “World Wall”\, MOCA\, Los Angeles\, (2022). SUMMARY:Celebration and Sleuthing: The Strange History of Philadelphia's South Indian Temple Hall
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 15\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Darielle Mason\, Ph.D.\, The Stella Kramrisch Curator of Indian and Himalayan Art\, Head of the Department of South Asian Art\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\nVirtual Event \nIn 1919 more than sixty huge carved granite blocks from Southeastern India were offloaded onto the lawn of a museum in Philadelphia. Their unique story spans over a century and reaches across the globe. This talk\, drawn from the 2022 book by Dr. Mason\, Storied Stone: Reframing the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s South Indian Temple Hall\, introduces the history of these carvings and some of the individuals involved in their movement and reinterpretation. It will pull back the curtain on decision-making in the museum and introduce the detective work of finding the blocks’ origins. In the end\, we will think together about what it means for a US fine arts museum to “own” parts of a Hindu temple in the past and today. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:The Art of Literacy in Early Modern Japan
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 27\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Mai Yamaguchi\, Andrew W. Mellon Assistant Curator of Japanese and Korean Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art\nVirtual Event \n  \nReading and writing were popular pastimes in early modern Japan. From the 1600s to the 1800s\, the printing industry developed rapidly\, making printed materials available to readers in urban and rural areas alike. Woodblock printing meant that books and prints could be mass produced\, sold cheaply\, and distributed widely. Readership grew steadily as temple schools taught basic reading and writing to people from the merchant and lower classes. This talk considers two forms of literacy\, textual and visual\, that enabled people to participate in a burgeoning public life and complements an exhibition of the same name on view until August 6\, 2023\, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nSave your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link via confirmation email with instructions once you secure your place.\n \n  \nSave my spot!\n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi\, I want to cancel my subscription (detail)\, 1878. SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: The Art of Georgia O'Keeffe and Henry Moore
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, July 30th \n1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT \n  \nGeorgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore both sought inspiration from the natural world throughout their careers. They were uncannily similar in their need to be in nature and in their collection of natural forms such as bones\, stones\, and shells\, and both used these found objects as sources for their work. They independently sought and were inspired by the organic roots of modern abstraction\, half a world away from each other. This tour will explore these artists’ works and the connection between the themes in which they were engaged\, comparing their working methods\, exploration of found objects\, and the juxtaposition of unlikely forms. \nPlease reserve your spot 24 hours before the event by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email the day before the tour. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n\nHosted by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \nFeatured: Georgia O’Keeffe\, Ram’s Head\, Blue Morning Glory\, 1938. Oil on canvas.
