SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Tour Series: Meddling with the Sex of Angels
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 18\n10:00 a.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nCristina Della Coletta\, Ph.D.\, Dean of the Division of Arts & Humanities at the University of California\, San Diego will share her research on the 1911 expo in Turin\, covered in her book World’s Fairs Italian Style\, the Great Expositions in Turin and Their Narratives\, 1860-1915 (2006). \nAccording to conventional wisdom\, Italy was not an influential participant in the nationalistic and imperialistic discourses that world’s fairs produced in countries such as Great Britain\, France\, and the United States. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, however\, Italy hosted numerous national and international exhibitions expounding notions of national identity\, imperial expansion\, technological progress\, and capitalist growth. \nWorld’s Fairs Italian-Style explores world’s fairs in Italy at the turn of the twentieth century in comparison to their more famous counterparts in France\, England\, and the United States. Cristina Della Coletta demonstrates that\, because of its social fragmentation and hybrid history\, Italy was a site of both hegemony and subordination – an aspiring imperial power whose colonization started from within. She focuses on two best-selling authors\, Emilio Salgari and Guido Gozzano\, and illustrates how these authors interpreted their age’s ‘exposition mentality.’ Salgari and Gozzano’s exposition narratives\, Della Coletta argues\, reveal Italy’s uncertainties about own sense of national identity\, and its belated commitment to Western imperialism. \nOf interest to students and scholars of literature\, cultural history\, and Italian\, World’s Fairs Italian-Style provides a fascinating glimpse into a hitherto unexplored area of study\, and brings to light a cultural phenomenon that played a significant role in shaping Italy’s national identity. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 31\n1:00 pm\nMuseum Boardroom \nScripps is fortunate to have a large teaching collection of artworks from Asia\, including over 2500 Japanese prints\, more than 150 Ming and Qing Dynasty Chinese paintings\, an extensive Asian textile collection\, an East Asian cloisonné collection\, and more than 100 Chinese bronze mirrors. These works are regularly shown in classes and used in student curated exhibitions on campus. An exhibition in September to October 2019 at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery will highlight some of the best examples\, including 7th–8th century Tang Dynasty mirrors\, 14th–16th century Chinese paintings\, and 19th–20th century Japanese cloisonné. Copley Auditorium \nBeginning from the fine Giorgione portrait in the Museum’s collection\, British art historian\, Nigel McGilchrist\, traces the path which leads from the extraordinary innovations of Giorgione and Titian in Venice – and later of Caravaggio (whose work both Velázquez and Goya saw when they visited Rome) – into the heart of Spanish painting in its Golden Age: El Greco\, Zurbarán\, Sánchez Cotán\, and the greatest Spanish masters.  This is a fascinating story of journeys\, influences\, illnesses\, challenges and emulation: it results in some of the most individualistic works in the history of art. \nArt-historian Nigel McGilchrist was a scholar at Winchester College and at Oxford\, and has lived in the Mediterranean area – Greece\, Turkey and Italy – for almost forty years\, working initially for the Italian Ministry of Arts in the field of wall-painting conservation.  He taught at Rome University\, for the University of Massachusetts\, and was formerly Dean of European Studies for a consortium of American Universities.  He lectures widely in art and architectural history at museums and institutions in Europe and the USA\, and has written a detailed survey of the art and architecture of the Aegean world in twenty volumes (McGilchrist’s Greek Islands).  This is the eleventh time in almost twenty-five years that he has spoken at the San Diego Museum of Art.  His home is now on the Greek island of Kythera. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world.
