SUMMARY:Art in the Public Realm
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Gail Goldman\, Public Art Activist and Consultant\nVirtual Event \n  \nArtists working in the public realm can accomplish far more than placing a beautiful artwork on a pedestal or in a plaza. Their work can transform space\, heighten our awareness\, stimulate human interaction\, and help define community. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world—the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are. This lecture will explore trends in public art over the years including architecturally integrated art\, environmental art\, digital new media\, and interactive art\, among others. \n  \nThis lecture celebrates the legacy of Larry Baza\, whose passion\, commitment\, and advocacy for the arts made San Diego a better place. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \n  \nFeatured: Beverly Penn\, Global Proportion\, 2019. SUMMARY:A (Personal) Jaunt through Northwestern Indian Textiles
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 16\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Ravinder Reddy\nVirtual Event \nIndia has an astounding variety of textiles reflecting a continuous tradition of craftsmanship and trade that spans millennia. Then there are regional centers that have created their own unique techniques and motifs. This presentation will showcase a small aspect of the vast panorama that is Indian textiles. \nIn 2018 event speaker Ravinder Reddy visited Northwest India on a tour that focused on textiles of the region\, specifically Rajasthan and Gujarat. Gujarat is probably the most important center of textiles in India\, and at one time the largest exporter of cotton fabric. Rajasthan is one of the most colorful regions as it relates to textiles. In this presentation we will briefly explore the importance of Northwest India in the story of textiles; look at some regional textiles such as bandhani (tie-dyeing)\, block printing\, and shisha (mirror-work); and finish with showing some textiles that were acquired on this trip. \nDr. Ravinder Reddy\, MD\, is a psychiatrist\, author\, and teacher. He has been deeply interested in many aspects of Indian art. Over the course of five decades\, his focus has included Kushan numismatics\, medieval Shiva sculpture\, early maps depicting the Indian subcontinent\, arms and armour of the region and Hindu iconography. Currently he is exploring textiles of the region. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Art of Reading Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 13\, 2022\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nMuseum Boardroom or Virtual \n  \nJoin fellow book lovers for a hybrid Art of Reading Book Club featuring Strapless: John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X by Deborah Davis. The subject of John Singer Sargent’s most famous painting was twenty-three-year-old New Orleans Creole Virginie Gautreau\, who moved to Paris and quickly became the “it girl” of her day. Unveiled at the 1884 Paris Salon\, Gautreau’s portrait generated the attention she craved-but it led to infamy rather than stardom. Drawing on documents from private collections and other previously unexamined materials\, and featuring a cast of characters including Oscar Wilde and Richard Wagner\, Strapless is a tale of art and celebrity\, obsession and betrayal. \nEngage in spirited conversation about the book in person at the Museum or virtually via Zoom and enjoy an in-person tour of complementary works of art on view at the Museum. \nPlease save your spot by Wednesday\, August 10\, by clicking on one of the below links. All in-person participants should check in at the Museum rotunda admissions desk then meet at the Museum boardroom.
