SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: Painting Paradise
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, September 20 \n1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT \n  \nExplore the paradise that was and is California. The period of the late 1800s and the early 1900s was an amazing moment for painting outside (also known as plein air painting) in California.  Artists throughout the state were painting on site with breathtaking results that were unique to this part of the world.   They explored color and light through visible brushstrokes but their styles were varied.  We will explore the landscapes of California through the eyes and brushes of these dynamic painters. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n\nHosted by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \nFeatured: Alfred Richard Mitchell\, La Jolla Cove\, 1950. SUMMARY:Wunderkammerkŏri: Reimagining and Reinventing Ancestral Legacy through Collecting and Display
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 28\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Mirae kh RHEE\, Artist-in-Residence\, Museum für Asiatische Kunst and Ethnologisches Museum\, Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin\nVirtual Event \n  \nIn this lecture\, transnational artist Mirae kh RHEE invites us into the long history of the collector and collections from both Asia and Europe. This multimedia project interrogates the presentation and collection practices of the male ruling elite and examines works from collections that extend from the famed Green Vault in Dresden to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The artist has fashioned a new interpretation of the cabinet of curiosities\, which she calls Wunderkammerkŏri\, a mash-up of German and Korean languages. Wunderkammern\, or cabinets of curiosities\, arose in mid-16th century Europe as repositories for wondrous objects but gradually appeared in 17th–18th century Qing China and Joseon Korea in the form of Chinese treasure boxes (Duobaoge) and Korean still-life genre painting of books and the scholar’s room (Munbangdo). Working in drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, installation\, participatory practices\, and emerging technologies\, like augmented reality\, the artist speaks about her motivations and exhibition plans. \n  \nArtist Biography \nSouth Korean born social practice artist (이미래/李未來) Mirae kh RHEE’s transracial life experiences led her to work between the United States\, South Korea\, and Germany\, where learning foreign languages\, code-switching\, and cultural traditions and customs continuously inform her artwork. Through the lens of transnational feminism and decolonial approaches\, she creates complex research-based Gesamtkunstwerk(e) that tell auto-ethnographical narratives. RHEE received her MFA in studio art at the University of California–Irvine\, where she was a graduate studies diversity scholar and a Jacob K. Javits Fellow. As the current Artist-in-Residence at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst and Ethnologisches Museum\, Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin\, she developed and exhibited her first augmented reality artwork Sammel-Sucht/Collecting Crave. Her solo project will be presented at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst in 2024 and at the Residenzschloss Dresden in 2025. Learn more about RHEE at www.katehersrhee.com. \n  \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nSave your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Mohammad Barrangi: A Live Art Installation
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 4–Friday\, October 6\n10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. PT daily\nColonnade entrance to the May S. Marcy Sculpture Court (next to Panama 66 restaurant) \n  \nSee illustrator and artist Mohammad Barrangi share an important aspect of his artistic practice through a live demonstration of the reverse print transfer process that has become a signature aspect of his work. The artist will spend three days going methodically through the steps he takes to produce large-scale works such as Migration (2018)\, acquired by the Museum in 2021\, on this occasion conceiving a diptych inspired by Iranian history and visual traditions. \n  \nAbout the Artist \nBorn in Rasht\, Iran\, and now based in the United Kingdom\, Mohammad Barrangi is a globally recognized artist as well as a medal-winning athlete who has represented Iran internationally in the 100-meter sprint. Born without full mobility in his left arm\, Barrangi developed a unique artistic practice that utilizes his right hand and both feet to create his distinctive works. Blending traditional calligraphy with experimental mark-making techniques\, Barrangi combines elements of Persian calligraphy\, storytelling\, text\, and humor to create intimate works on handmade paper that are often expanded into large-scale murals. \nBarrangi holds a degree in graphic design from the Islamic Azad University of Tonekabon and recently graduated from the Royal Drawing School in London. He has extensively exhibited his work around the world\, winning numerous awards and recognition leading to the publication of numerous illustrations by him in a variety of books. His works have been acquired by the permanent collections of the British Museum\, the Royal Family Collection\, and the National Government Collection in the UK; the Cluj Napoka Art Museum in Romania; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and San Diego Museum of Art in the United States. \n  \nThis program is an Art + Empathy event organized by The San Diego Museum of Art and supported by cultural partnerships with Farhang Foundation in Los Angeles and the Persian Cultural Center in San Diego. \n  \n

SUMMARY:In Search of Sonder: Inspiring Empathy through Art
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 20\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Carlo Miranda\, Artist and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, The San Diego Museum of Art\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \n“Sonder” is a term coined by author John Koenig\, meaning “the profound feeling of realizing that everyone\, including strangers passing in the street\, has a life as complex as one’s own\, which they are constantly living despite one’s personal lack of awareness of it. Each subject has their own story\, their own dreams and desires and worries.” \nLocal artist Carlo Miranda (Filipino-American\, b. 1988) showcases ten recent paintings in his intimate exhibition\, Carlo Miranda: In Search of Sonder\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art through November 19\, 2023. His personal and hyperrealistic portraits\, painted in oil on panel\, depict those closest to him: his family\, his friends\, his barber. \nJoin Miranda and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, for an in-person conversation as they discuss Miranda’s life and the inspiration for his exhibition at the Museum. Hear too about Miranda’s process in creating his signature hyperrealistic portraits and how he aims to help viewers develop empathy toward his subjects or even construct imaginary stories of their lives. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \n  \nFeatured: Carlo Miranda\, The Barber (detail)\, 2022. Oil on panel. SUMMARY:Beyond the Sharp Edge: Iconography of Indic Arms — CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 21\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Ravinder Reddy\, MD\, FRAS\, South Asian Arts Council\, The San Diego Museum of Art\nVirtual Event \n  \nUPDATE: This lecture has been canceled. Please stay tuned for a rescheduled date. \nIndian arms and armor are frequently adorned with auspicious and sacred imagery to induce shakti (divine power) to enter them\, thus transforming functional objects into implements that hold within them the quality of numen—magical or divine power. This presentation will survey the varieties of Hindu sacred images—goddesses\, gods\, demi-gods\, mythological beasts—that adorn arms and armor of the Indian subcontinent\, and explore the underlying reasons why these specific images may have been chosen among the vast pantheon of Indian sacred imagery. \n  \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured at top right: © Ravi Reddy

SUMMARY:Bus Tour: LACMA and The Great Wall of Los Angeles by Judy Baca
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 5\n7:30 a.m.–8:00 p.m. \n  \nTravel to The Great Wall of Los Angeles for a brief viewing of this half-mile-long mural by Judy Baca\, then continue on to LACMA to see two exciting exhibitions: Painting in the River of Angels\, which further explores Judy Baca’s murals\, and The World Made Wondrous. \n  \nThe Great Wall of Los Angeles \nOne of Los Angeles’s true cultural landmarks\, The Great Wall of Los Angeles in San Fernando Valley is one of the country’s most respected and largest monuments to interracial harmony. This is a half-mile-long mural depicting the history of California\, created by Chicana muralist Judy Baca and 400 youth and their families. \n  \nPainting in the River of Angels: Judy Baca and The Great Wall | LACMA \nFor the first time in her practice\, Judy Baca transforms a museum into a studio. She and artists from the Social and Public Art Resource Center expand The Great Wall of Los Angeles\, painting two sections of the mural at LACMA. Come see works from the Chicano Movement\, Watts Renaissance\, and archival materials that have never before been exhibited. \n  \nThe World Made Wondrous: The Dutch Collector’s Cabinet and the Politics of Possession | LACMA \nThe World Made Wondrous recreates a fictive 17th-century Dutch collector’s cabinet in order to examine the political and colonial histories of European collecting practices in that period. The exhibition interrogates the underlying agendas and structures that were fundamental to these collections—which are precursors to today’s European and American museums. \n  \nSave My Spot \n  \n\nSchedule\n7:00 a.m. | Arrive in Mission Bay \n7:30 a.m. | Bus picks up guests from Mission Bay (from 2688 E. SUMMARY:Decadence and Decay: Fashioning the Image of Lady Mary Curzon\, Vicereine of India
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 11\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Siddhartha V. Shah\, Ph.D.\, John Wieland 1958 Director of the Mead Art Museum\, Amherst College\nVirtual Event \n  \nA headless mannequin placed within a glass box wears a legendary ball gown commissioned in 1902 by the Vicereine of India\, Mary Curzon. The dress—commissioned for a state ball in Delhi—was as symbolic as it was magnificent\, featuring peacock feathers embroidered in gold\, silver\, and copper threads. Worn on the statuesque body of the Vicereine\, the gown transformed her into “a vision of embodied light” that revealed the opulence of the British Raj rather than the ways in which it was falling apart at the seams. Its display also attempts to highlight the glamour and glory of Empire\, though it\, too\, is clearly in a state of dramatic and irreversible deterioration. This presentation examines how imperial authority and the subjugation of the Indian Subcontinent were staged on the body of Lady Curzon through dress and ornament\, veiling the steady decline of British rule as well as Curzon’s own failing health. We consider how dress can simultaneously reveal an individual’s authentic self while also laying bare their deepest insecurities\, and explore the tensions between the natural process of decay and our often unnatural efforts to prevent it. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place.\n \nSave my spot! \n  \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Workshop of Kishan Chand (India) and tailored by Jean-Philippe Worth (France)\, The Peacock Dress\, 1900-1902. SUMMARY:James Balog: Photographs from the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: James Balog\, Artist\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nJames Balog: Photographs from the Anthropocene\, on view through March 10\, 2024\, at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA)\, showcases a series of photographs that describes the ancient cyclical patterns of the earth’s life forms and the impact of human activity. For four decades\, James Balog has studied ancient cultural assumptions about the relationship between human nature and the rest of nature. Blending art and science\, Balog’s photographs deliver profound new insights about the environment today. \nThe current epoch of geologic time is known as the “Anthropocene” to reflect the pervasive and enduring traces of human activity left on the Earth. Through innovative imagery\, his projects interpret significant aspects of what has changed\, what’s survived\, and what changes are projected for the future. His photographs reveal nature’s dazzling beauty and its capacity for destruction. \nHis exhibition has been co-organized by the Earth Vision Institute and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography\, Minneapolis/Paris/Lausanne\, in association with the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art. \n  \nFeatured: James Balog\, Ice Diamond #1\, 2009.
