Their unique story spans over a century and reaches across the globe. This talk\, drawn from the 2022 book by Dr. Mason\, Storied Stone: Reframing the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s South Indian Temple Hall\, introduces the history of these carvings and some of the individuals involved in their movement and reinterpretation. It will pull back the curtain on decision-making in the museum and introduce the detective work of finding the blocks’ origins. Mellon Assistant Curator of Japanese and Korean Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art\nVirtual Event \n  \nReading and writing were popular pastimes in early modern Japan. From the 1600s to the 1800s\, the printing industry developed rapidly\, making printed materials available to readers in urban and rural areas alike. Woodblock printing meant that books and prints could be mass produced\, sold cheaply\, and distributed widely. Readership grew steadily as temple schools taught basic reading and writing to people from the merchant and lower classes. They show the dancer in gorgeous costumes in a variety of poses\, while the photographer changes the studio lighting and fabric backgrounds for full views\, mid-shots and close-ups of the dancer’s body. What is the visual conversation taking place in New York across the distinct worlds of the Indian dancer and the American photographer? DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 9\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Jeevak Parpia\, Professor of Physics\, Cornell University\, and Banoo Parpia\, retired Director of Asian and Middle East Alumni Affairs and Development at Cornell University\nVirtual Event \n  \nIndia is renowned for the textiles it produced for centuries for world markets around the Indian Ocean\, from Indonesia to the east coast of Africa and beyond\, into the Mediterranean and Europe. Not only did the textiles from the market influence the Indian makers\, but the local markets also began to produce textiles resembling the imports from India. Together\, our speakers\, Jeevak and Banoo Parpia\, have created a renowned collection of Indian textiles\, which are currently being exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston in Woven Wonders: Indian Textiles from the Parpia Collection. \nUsing the Parpia collection as a starting point\, Jeevak and Banoo Parpia (with examples drawn from their collection and others) will focus on several designs that exhibit continuity\, and the likely influence of trade on design and demand. An example is the trade cloths that have strongly been influenced by Jain Kalpasutra paintings\, which often depict women in various roles. Yet\, none of the textiles featuring these images have been found in India\, but have traveled to Egypt and to Indonesia. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Mohammad Barrangi\, Artist; Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art\, The San Diego Museum of Art; and Roshi Rahnama\, Founder and Director of ADVOCARTSY\, an Iranian contemporary art platform and gallery\nVirtual Event \n  \nGain new insights in contemporary Iranian art through UK-based Iranian artist Mohammad Barrangi\, whose layered artistic practice combines contemporary printmaking with Iranian illustrated manuscript traditions to explore narratives about personal experience and identity as well as more universal themes. Much of the artist’s repertoire carries an extra layer relating directly to his experience as an immigrant trying to find their way in a diasporic world\, but all of Barrangi’s work is layered with elements added at random in a deliberate manner to create the final collage. The Museum acquired Migration\, its first work by Barrangi\, in 2021 with funds raised by the Museum’s Patrons of the Arts of Iran and the Persian Cultural Center (PCC) of San Diego.  \n\nHear the artist in conversation with Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art at the Museum\, and Roshi Rahnama\, Founder and Director of ADVOCARTSY\, an Iranian contemporary art platform and gallery. SUMMARY:Wunderkammerkŏri: Reimagining and Reinventing Ancestral Legacy through Collecting and Display
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 28\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Mirae kh RHEE\, Artist-in-Residence\, Museum für Asiatische Kunst and Ethnologisches Museum\, Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin\nVirtual Event \n  \nIn this lecture\, transnational artist Mirae kh RHEE invites us into the long history of the collector and collections from both Asia and Europe. This multimedia project interrogates the presentation and collection practices of the male ruling elite and examines works from collections that extend from the famed Green Vault in Dresden to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The artist has fashioned a new interpretation of the cabinet of curiosities\, which she calls Wunderkammerkŏri\, a mash-up of German and Korean languages. Wunderkammern\, or cabinets of curiosities\, arose in mid-16th century Europe as repositories for wondrous objects but gradually appeared in 17th–18th century Qing China and Joseon Korea in the form of Chinese treasure boxes (Duobaoge) and Korean still-life genre painting of books and the scholar’s room (Munbangdo). Working in drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, installation\, participatory practices\, and emerging technologies\, like augmented reality\, the artist speaks about her motivations and exhibition plans. \n  \nArtist Biography \nSouth Korean born social practice artist (이미래/李未來) Mirae kh RHEE’s transracial life experiences led her to work between the United States\, South Korea\, and Germany\, where learning foreign languages\, code-switching\, and cultural traditions and customs continuously inform her artwork. Through the lens of transnational feminism and decolonial approaches\, she creates complex research-based Gesamtkunstwerk(e) that tell auto-ethnographical narratives. RHEE received her MFA in studio art at the University of California–Irvine\, where she was a graduate studies diversity scholar and a Jacob K. Javits Fellow. As the current Artist-in-Residence at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst and Ethnologisches Museum\, Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin\, she developed and exhibited her first augmented reality artwork Sammel-Sucht/Collecting Crave. Her solo project will be presented at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst in 2024 and at the Residenzschloss Dresden in 2025. SUMMARY:Mohammad Barrangi: A Live Art Installation
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 4–Friday\, October 6\n10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. PT daily\nColonnade entrance to the May S. Marcy Sculpture Court (next to Panama 66 restaurant) \n  \nSee illustrator and artist Mohammad Barrangi share an important aspect of his artistic practice through a live demonstration of the reverse print transfer process that has become a signature aspect of his work. The artist will spend three days going methodically through the steps he takes to produce large-scale works such as Migration (2018)\, acquired by the Museum in 2021\, on this occasion conceiving a diptych inspired by Iranian history and visual traditions. \n  \nAbout the Artist \nBorn in Rasht\, Iran\, and now based in the United Kingdom\, Mohammad Barrangi is a globally recognized artist as well as a medal-winning athlete who has represented Iran internationally in the 100-meter sprint. Born without full mobility in his left arm\, Barrangi developed a unique artistic practice that utilizes his right hand and both feet to create his distinctive works. Blending traditional calligraphy with experimental mark-making techniques\, Barrangi combines elements of Persian calligraphy\, storytelling\, text\, and humor to create intimate works on handmade paper that are often expanded into large-scale murals. \nBarrangi holds a degree in graphic design from the Islamic Azad University of Tonekabon and recently graduated from the Royal Drawing School in London. He has extensively exhibited his work around the world\, winning numerous awards and recognition leading to the publication of numerous illustrations by him in a variety of books. His works have been acquired by the permanent collections of the British Museum\, the Royal Family Collection\, and the National Government Collection in the UK; the Cluj Napoka Art Museum in Romania; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and San Diego Museum of Art in the United States. \n  \nThis program is an Art + Empathy event organized by The San Diego Museum of Art and supported by cultural partnerships with Farhang Foundation in Los Angeles and the Persian Cultural Center in San Diego. \n  \n
