SUMMARY:Beyond Bollywood: 2000 Years of Dance in the Arts of South Asia\, Southeast Asia\, and the Himalayan Region
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 23\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Forrest McGill\, Wattis Senior Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art\, Asian Art Museum (San Francisco)\nVirtual Event \n  \nThe lecture focused on the major exhibition Beyond Bollywood: Dance in the Arts of South Asia\, Southeast Asia\, and the Himalayan Region opening in late March at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. \nLearn about the different meanings and ideas that dance has conveyed over the last two millennia in the Indian cultural sphere\, where dance has played—and continues to play—an especially meaningful part in religion\, mythology\, courtly life\, and ceremonies. Representing five possible answers to the question “What is dance accomplishing here?”\, the included artworks are grouped into five sections: Destruction and Creation; Devotion; Subjugation; Glorification; and Celebration. The lecture addresses how each of these ideas has been embodied in artworks representing dance. \nThe lecture also shows how the elaborate exhibition design reflects the dynamic and emotionally engaging nature of dance itself. The exhibition space of each section includes an evocative environment in which visitors are invited to experience an immersive journey of sensation. Whether the mood is reverent\, awed\, or celebratory\, each section elicits a unique response. \n  \nForrest McGill\, Wattis Senior Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art\, has worked at the Asian Art Museum for more than twenty years. Previously he was a museum administrator and a teacher\, curator\, researcher\, and writer in Asian art. Major exhibitions he organized or co-organized include The Rama Epic: Hero\, Heroine\, Ally\, Foe (2016); Gorgeous\, a joint project with SFMOMA (2014); Emerald Cities: Arts of Siam and Burma\, 1775–1950 (2009)\, A Curious Affair: The Fascination between East and West (2006)\, and The Kingdom of Siam: The Arts of Central Thailand\, 1350-1800 (2005). He edited or co-edited the catalogs for all these exhibitions. \nFor the last several years McGill has been co-organizing with the Cincinnati Art Museum the major exhibition Beyond Bollywood: 2000 Years of Dance in the Arts of South Asia\, Southeast Asia\, and the Himalayan Region\, which will be at the Asian Art Museum March 31-July 10\, 2023. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore breathing exercises\, guided meditation\, movement\, and sound within select Museum art galleries. SUMMARY:Gods in Living Color: 19th-Century Devotional Lithographs from Calcutta
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 11\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Laura Weinstein\, Ananda Coomaraswamy Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art\, Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\nVirtual Event \n  \nFor over two thousand years\, artists in the Indian Subcontinent have depicted Hindu deities through a wide range of media\, frequently innovating when new techniques and materials became available or in response to social or religious changes. One such moment occurred during the 19th century in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata)\, when new technologies of reproduction and systems of representation brought by the British Raj—and its allied systems of commerce and culture—opened up new representational possibilities. This lecture will address what happened when lithography and other depictive tools entered a local visual ecosystem already rich with indigenous forms of painted and printed devotional imagery. The new forms of sacred and mythological imagery that Bengali artists created during this moment of transformation were\, until recently\, mostly excluded from the art historical canon. Celebrating and exploring them not only broadens our view of the history of Indian art and religion but also helps us to understand the ever-expanding universe of sacred images that we see in home\, shop and office shrines around the globe today. \nLaura Weinstein is Ananda Coomaraswamy Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. Under Vidya Dehejia’s supervision she received her Ph.D. at Columbia University\, where she researched Persian and Urdu manuscripts from the Qutb Shahi sultanate of Golconda. At the MFA she has lead the reinstallation of the Museum’s South Asian\, Southeast Asian and Islamic art collections and has curated exhibitions including Ink\, Silk & Gold: Islamic Art from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston and Megacities Asia\, as well as numerous smaller exhibitions drawing on the MFA’s holdings. SUMMARY:The Art and Life of Fukuda Kodōjin: Japan’s Great Poet and Landscape Artist
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 30\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Andreas Marks\, Ph.D.\, Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese and Korean Art\, Minneapolis Institute of Arts\nVirtual Event \n  \nFukuda Kodōjin (1865–1944) was one of a handful of scholar-artists who continued the tradition of Japanese literati painting (nanga) in the early twentieth century. Kodōjin’s painting style is characterized by bizarrely shaped mountain forms rendered in vivid color or monochromatic ink that often include a solitary scholar enjoying the expansive beauty of nature. Not only a painter\, Kodōjin was also an accomplished poet and calligrapher patronized by influential industrialists and politicians of the era. Following his death\, he slipped into obscurity\, and today is more appreciated outside his native Japan. The result of fifteen years of extensive research into more than eight hundred works\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art will present the first ever exhibition of Kodōjin outside of Japan along with a 344-page book. This exhibit will run from April to June of 2023. \n\nDr. Andreas Marks is the ​Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese and Korean Art and Director of the Clark Center at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. From 2008 to 2013 he was the Director and Chief Curator of the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture in California. See full details here. \n\nBloom Bash Featured Artists\nLaurie Shapiro\n\n  \nLaurie Shapiro is an installation artist and painter living and working in Los Angeles\, California. Her work is featured in public and private collections worldwide; in addition to widely commissioned all-encompassing installations for clients including the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art\, Otherworld\, Walter Studios\, and most recently\, The San Diego Museum of Art. Shapiro holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Focusing on the intrinsic connection between all living species\, Shapiro’s work both conceptually and physically brings people together. \n“We Are All Connected To Each Other Through Nature” is an immersive\, glowing tunnel installation made with repetitive screen-printed drawings of plant life\, as well as layers of hand painting on clear vinyl. Hanging lanterns with the same patterns add colorful glows of light within and outside of the tunnel\, creating an interactive and glowing environment on the plaza where visitors of all ages are encouraged to playfully interact with the artwork. \n“Magic Lanterns” are a special edition of ten unique flower-shaped hanging light sculptures. Shapiro designed the metal frames\, which she covered with mixed media painting and sewing. Equipped with smart bulbs\, the Magic Lanterns flicker and change colors\, creating glows that illuminate the Museum’s courtyard. \n  \nAmanda Witucki\n\n  \nAmanda Witucki is a self-taught paper sculpture artist working from her home studio in Austin\, Texas. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 8\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Vidya Dehejia\, Barbara Stoler Miller Professor Emerita of Indian Art at Columbia University\nVirtual Event \n  \nJoin an online lecture with internationally renowned scholar of Indian art Vidya Dehejia. Be introduced to a master sculptor working around the year 1000 whose inspiration may well have been child-saint Sambandar’s opening hymn that hails Shiva as “the thief who stole my heart.” Dehejia then moves beyond the sensuous to ask questions of this material that have not been asked before\, treating the bronzes as material objects that interacted in meaningful ways with human activities\, and with socioeconomic and religious practices. Where did the Cholas acquire the copper required to cast the many temple bronzes that are solid and heavy pieces of metal? Why were the Cholas obsessed with island Sri Lanka? What were the circumstances that permitted the creation of so many temples and such large numbers of exquisite bronzes despite the constant warfare that the Chola monarchs undertook to retain and expand their empire? What was the source of the pearls and coral\, rubies and diamonds that were embedded in gold jewelry gifted to adorn every temple’s sacred bronzes? Why did the Cholas cover the walls of their temple walls with inscriptions– over 12\,000 in total – that cast intriguing light on society of the time? \nVidya Dehejia is Barbara Stoler Miller Professor Emerita of Indian Art at Columbia University in New York. An internationally renowned art historian\, she is the author of a range of books on the history of Indian art that connect the literary and visual arts in meaningful ways. Her most recent publications include The Thief who Stole My Heart: The Material Life of Sacred Bronzes from Chola India\, 855-1280 and India: A Story through 100 Objects. Other well-known books include The Unfinished. Indian Stone Carvers at Work (2016)\, The Body Adorned (2012)\, The Sensuous & the Sacred: Chola Bronzes from South India (2002)\, Discourse in Early Buddhist Art (1997). Between 1994-2002\, Dr. Dehejia served as Chief Curator & Deputy Director of the Freer & Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian in Washington DC\, and as Acting Director in 2001-2002. In 2016\, she presented the 65th annual A.W. Mellon lectures in the Fine Arts at the National Gallery in Washington DC\, a series in which the art of India was featured for the very first time in the 65-year history of the Mellon lectures. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 27\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Hollis Goodall\, Curator of Japanese Art\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)\nVirtual Event \n  \nSam Francis (1923–1994) spent many of the years between 1957 and the early 1990’s traveling between his studios in Japan and California. His friendships with avant-garde artists in Osaka and Tokyo introduced him to the principles of the art movements Gutai (meaning concrete or concreteness) and Mono-ha (the school of things). The missions of these two artist groups change the approach to art by allowing the materials to speak of their inherent qualities. Over 100 paintings and sculptures trace their artistic development\, exploring their investigations of bones\, stones\, internal/external forms of flowers and seashells\, and landscape\, as well as Surrealist concepts such as the pairing of objects and metamorphosis. This exhibition unites the work of these artists for the first time\, and re-creates their studios in the Museum with their original contents of found objects\, tools\, and furnishings. Visitors will be able to explore their working practices\, and see how these humble objects inspired some of their most important artistic creations. \nO’Keeffe and Moore is on view at The San Diego Museum of Art from May 13 through August 27\, 2023\, and will then travel to the Albuquerque Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
