SUMMARY:Traditions Altered: Synthesizing Past and Present in Japanese Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 31\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker:  Laura J. Mueller\, Ph.D. \n  \nJapan’s art history is long and distinguished with its varied richness and celebrated traditions. The well-respected and admired artistic traditions of Japan can\, however\, be accompanied by overwhelming feelings of constraint and burden for a contemporary artist tied to its legacy. Rather than shun these seemingly restrictive artistic traditions\, many of the most compelling Japanese contemporary artists working today have instead embraced them; sampling\, altering\, and repackaging traditions to create a dynamic\, contemporary Japanese artistic identity. Utilizing both traditional and new modes of representation and media\, this presentation will look at some of the most exciting Japanese artists working today and showcase how their work dramatically reflects our current global condition while addressing topics such as technology\, climate crisis\, and modern warfare. \nLaura J. Mueller\, Ph.D.\, is an independent curator and art advisor. She most recently served as Curator of Art at the Portland Japanese Garden until 2020 when the pandemic forced the closure of the art department. Prior to her work with the Portland Japanese Garden\, she resided in New York City for more than twelve years\, first as director of Joan B Mirviss Ltd Japanese Art and then leaving to establish MyCurator LLC\, a firm specializing in curatorial consulting and collections management. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 26\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Joan Cummins\, Lisa and Bernard Selz Senior Curator of Asian Art\, Brooklyn Museum\nVirtual Event \n  \nFrom the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries\, most of northern India was under the rule of the Mughal empire\, but regional kings maintained some control over their traditional domains. Many of these kings were Rajputs\, celebrated for their prowess in warfare\, their staunch support of Hinduism\, and the impressive architecture of their capitals. Among the Rajputs there were some who patronized large workshops of artists producing very colorful\, very elaborately detailed illustrated manuscripts depicting life at court\, Hindu epics\, and poetic themes. \nThrough beautiful images\, this talk will introduce the Rajputs and the arts they patronized\, with an emphasis on manuscript paintings. We will look at the ways that Rajput rulers used art as a way to promote specific ideas about their power\, their traditions\, and their position in relation to the ruling Mughal emperors\, and later the British. A resurgence of great artistic talent from directors\, screenwriters\, producers and filmmakers are noted by the work of Guillermo del Toro\, Alejandro G. Iñárritu\, and Alfonso Cuarón\, just to name a few. Their success has provided access to the diversification of Mexico’s stories from underrepresented groups and unconventional concepts. \nThis new wave of film production is historically celebrated with the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema that dominated the Latin American film industry from the 1930s to the 1960s. Topics evolved from the provincial society of Mexico at that time to the inspirations of masculinity\, family\, ethnicity\, and music. Fernando de Fuentes\, Emilio “El Indio” Fernández Romo\, Alejandro Galindo\, Ismael Rodriguez\, and Luis Buñuel became popular directors that challenged the traditional values of Mexican society\, including politically. Iconic actors such as Cantinflas\, Maria Felix\, Dolores del Rio\, Pedro Infante\, and Jorge Negrete were renowned internationally. \n  \nGregorio Luke has given over 1\,000 lectures worldwide from The Library of Congress to universities such as Harvard\, Columbia\, and Georgetown. Li Curator of the Chinese Garden and Director of the Center for East Asian Garden Studies at the Huntington Library\, Art Museum\, and Botanical Gardens\n \n  \nWords are everywhere in the Huntington’s Chinese Garden (known as Liu Fang Yuan 流芳園\, or the Garden of Flowing Fragrance). Names adorn rocks and buildings and poetic couplets frame entryways and vistas. Since 2007\, the Huntington Library\, Art Museum\, and Botanical Gardens has commissioned more than thirty contemporary artists to create the original works of calligraphy that served as the models for these inscriptions. This talk will introduce A Garden of Words: the Calligraphy of Liu Fang Yuan\, an exhibition in the Huntington’s new art gallery in the Chinese Garden. The exhibition celebrates these inscriptions by offering four foundational perspectives for contemplating calligraphy. \nPhillip E. Bloom is the June and Simon K.C. Li Curator of the Chinese Garden and the director of the Center for East Asian Garden Studies at the Huntington Library\, Art Museum\, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino\, California. A specialist in art of the Song dynasty\, he received his Ph.D. in art history from Harvard University in 2013. Prior to moving to the Huntington in 2017\, he was assistant professor of East Asian art history at Indiana University\, Bloomington. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 28\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeakers: Ling-en Lu\, Ph.D.\, Curator of East Asian Art\, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art\nKimberly Masteller\, Ph.D.\, Jeanne McCray Beals Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art\, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art\nYayoi Shinoda\, Assistant Curator of East Asian Art\, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art\nVirtual Event \n  \nFor the first time in decades\, rarely seen textile masterworks from China\, India\, Japan\, Iran\, and Turkey in the collection of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art are now on view in an extraordinary exhibition. Made with fine materials\, exemplary techniques\, and superb artistry\, these Asian luxury textiles and costumes were prized objects\, both domestically and through global trade. Three distinguished presenters from The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art will share highlights from this exhibition\, including classical Persian carpets and velvets\, exquisite Kashmir shawls\, important Chinese court robes\, sumptuous furnishings\, Japanese theatre costumes\, and Meiji-era tapestries. \n  \nPresenter Bios: \nLing-en Lu\, Ph.D. is the Curator of East Asian Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Lu is an expert in Chinese art and earned her doctorate in Art History at the University of Kansas. \nKimberly Masteller\, Ph.D. is the Jeanne McCray Beals Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Masteller is a specialist in the arts of South Asia and curates the Nelson-Atkins Islamic art collections. She earned her doctorate in the History of Art at The Ohio State University. \nYayoi Shinoda is the Assistant Curator of East Asian Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Shinoda is a specialist in Japanese Art.
