Their unique story spans over a century and reaches across the globe. This talk\, drawn from the 2022 book by Dr. Mason\, Storied Stone: Reframing the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s South Indian Temple Hall\, introduces the history of these carvings and some of the individuals involved in their movement and reinterpretation. It will pull back the curtain on decision-making in the museum and introduce the detective work of finding the blocks’ origins. Mellon Assistant Curator of Japanese and Korean Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art\nVirtual Event \n  \nReading and writing were popular pastimes in early modern Japan. From the 1600s to the 1800s\, the printing industry developed rapidly\, making printed materials available to readers in urban and rural areas alike. Woodblock printing meant that books and prints could be mass produced\, sold cheaply\, and distributed widely. Readership grew steadily as temple schools taught basic reading and writing to people from the merchant and lower classes. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 19\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Ajay Sinha\, Ph.D.\, Julie ’73 and Helene ’49 Herzig Professor in the Art History and Architectural Studies Department at Mount Holyoke College\nVirtual Event \n  \nAn unexpected discovery of black and white photographs of the Indian dancer Ram Gopal taken by the American photographer Carl Van Vechten in New York City in 1938 are the earliest visual record of a pioneer of classical Indian dance. They show the dancer in gorgeous costumes in a variety of poses\, while the photographer changes the studio lighting and fabric backgrounds for full views\, mid-shots and close-ups of the dancer’s body. What is the visual conversation taking place in New York across the distinct worlds of the Indian dancer and the American photographer? By taking a deep dive into the exchanges across different media and cultural worlds of the interwar years\, the presentation highlights the major findings of my recent book\, Photo-Attractions: An Indian dancer\, an American photographer\, and a German Camera. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link.
