DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 8\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Vidya Dehejia\, Barbara Stoler Miller Professor Emerita of Indian Art at Columbia University\nVirtual Event \n  \nJoin an online lecture with internationally renowned scholar of Indian art Vidya Dehejia. Be introduced to a master sculptor working around the year 1000 whose inspiration may well have been child-saint Sambandar’s opening hymn that hails Shiva as “the thief who stole my heart.” Dehejia then moves beyond the sensuous to ask questions of this material that have not been asked before\, treating the bronzes as material objects that interacted in meaningful ways with human activities\, and with socioeconomic and religious practices. Where did the Cholas acquire the copper required to cast the many temple bronzes that are solid and heavy pieces of metal? Why were the Cholas obsessed with island Sri Lanka? What were the circumstances that permitted the creation of so many temples and such large numbers of exquisite bronzes despite the constant warfare that the Chola monarchs undertook to retain and expand their empire? What was the source of the pearls and coral\, rubies and diamonds that were embedded in gold jewelry gifted to adorn every temple’s sacred bronzes? Why did the Cholas cover the walls of their temple walls with inscriptions– over 12\,000 in total – that cast intriguing light on society of the time? \nVidya Dehejia is Barbara Stoler Miller Professor Emerita of Indian Art at Columbia University in New York. An internationally renowned art historian\, she is the author of a range of books on the history of Indian art that connect the literary and visual arts in meaningful ways. Her most recent publications include The Thief who Stole My Heart: The Material Life of Sacred Bronzes from Chola India\, 855-1280 and India: A Story through 100 Objects. Other well-known books include The Unfinished. Indian Stone Carvers at Work (2016)\, The Body Adorned (2012)\, The Sensuous & the Sacred: Chola Bronzes from South India (2002)\, Discourse in Early Buddhist Art (1997). Between 1994-2002\, Dr. Dehejia served as Chief Curator & Deputy Director of the Freer & Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian in Washington DC\, and as Acting Director in 2001-2002. In 2016\, she presented the 65th annual A.W. Mellon lectures in the Fine Arts at the National Gallery in Washington DC\, a series in which the art of India was featured for the very first time in the 65-year history of the Mellon lectures. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 27\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Hollis Goodall\, Curator of Japanese Art\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)\nVirtual Event \n  \nSam Francis (1923–1994) spent many of the years between 1957 and the early 1990’s traveling between his studios in Japan and California. His friendships with avant-garde artists in Osaka and Tokyo introduced him to the principles of the art movements Gutai (meaning concrete or concreteness) and Mono-ha (the school of things). The missions of these two artist groups change the approach to art by allowing the materials to speak of their inherent qualities. Be among the first to see this one-of-a-kind exhibition.\nMembers are invited for a first look at this groundbreaking exhibition of two icons of Modernism\, Georgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore. Over 100 paintings and sculptures trace their artistic development\, exploring their investigations of bones\, stones\, internal/external forms of flowers and seashells\, and landscape\, as well as Surrealist concepts such as the pairing of objects and metamorphosis. This exhibition unites the work of these artists for the first time\, and re-creates their studios in the Museum with their original contents of found objects\, tools\, and furnishings. Visitors will be able to explore their working practices\, and see how these humble objects inspired some of their most important artistic creations. \nO’Keeffe and Moore is on view at The San Diego Museum of Art from May 13 through August 27\, 2023\, and will then travel to the Albuquerque Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. As a passionate advocate for the arts\, Ms. Velásquez has focused on fostering cross-cultural dialogues within the San Diego community as well as nationally and internationally. Throughout her professional career\, she has organized many high-profile exhibitions in her capacity as the Executive Director of the Museo Nacional de San Carlos\, Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL)\, the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City\, and currently with The San Diego Museum of Art. \n  \nO’Keeffe and Moore: Working with Photography\nAnita Feldman is Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and Education at The San Diego Museum of Art. She joined the Museum in 2014 and prior to that was Curator\, Head of Collections and Exhibitions\, and a member of the Moore Authentication Committee\, for the Henry Moore Foundation for eighteen years\, curating exhibitions of his work worldwide and overseeing major conservation initiatives for Moore’s works including for the Houses of Parliament and Kensington Gardens. Her publications include the first books on Moore’s textiles and his original plasters\, as well as Moore/Rodin (2013). At The San Diego Museum of Art\, she co-curated Richard Deacon: What You See is What You Get (2017) with Ariel Plotek; and curated Art of the Open Air (2015); Tim Shaw: Beyond Reason (2018); Terra: Fernando Casasempere (2022); and Justin Sterling: Chapel of the Rocks (2022).  She is the curator of O’Keeffe and Moore and editor of the accompanying catalogue. \n  \nGeorgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore: Opinions and Realizations\nDr. Barbara Buhler Lynes is an independent scholar and leading expert on Georgia O’Keeffe. She authored Georgia O’Keeffe: Catalogue Raisonné (Yale University Press\, 1999)\, as well as numerous publications about the artist and her contemporaries. She was founding curator of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and founding director of its research center (1999–2014). In addition\, Lynes has taught art history at Vanderbilt University\, Dartmouth College\, and Maryland Institute College of Art\, and served as Sunny Kaufman Senior Curator at Nova Southeastern University Art Museum\, a position from which she retired in 2020. She lectures widely in the United States and Europe and has contributed an essay entitled “Georgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore: Icons\, Innovators\, Voices of Authority” to the O’Keeffe and Moore exhibition catalogue. \n  \nHenry Moore: National Institution\n\nDr. Chris Stephens has been Director of the Holburne Museum\, Bath\, since 2017. Before that he worked at Tate in London for twenty-one years\, as Head of Displays at Tate Britain and Lead Curator of Modern British Art\, and oversaw the creation of the Tate’s Henry Moore gallery. His numerous exhibitions include Barbara Hepworth: Centenary at Tate St Ives (2003) and\, in London\, Francis Bacon (2008)\, Henry Moore (2010)\, Picasso and British Art (2012)\, and David Hockney (2017). He has published extensively and his book St Ives: The Art and the Artists was published in 2018. Dr. Stephens contributed and essay on the artists entitled “Modernism\, Nature\, and National Identity” to the O’Keeffe and Moore exhibition catalogue. \n  \nGetting At The Meaning of Things : Georgia O’Keeffe’s Material Interrogation of Life\, 1915–1985\nDale Kronkright is Head of Conservation at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum\, where he has worked since its inception in 1997. His research into O’Keeffe’s studio materials and techniques in collaboration with scientists and conservators at the National Gallery of Art resulted in the 2006 exhibition and catalogue Color and Conservation\, which documented the forty-year friendship of conservator Caroline Keck and Georgia O’Keeffe. His work also includes studying the efficacy of micro-environmental framing systems for the preservation of O’Keeffe’s paintings\, pastels\, watercolors\, and drawings\, as well as the use of 3-D imaging for the documentation of O’Keeffe’s historic homes and studios at Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch. \n  \nGeorgia O’Keeffe: Sculptor\nDr. Ariel Plotek served as Curator of Fine Art at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum from 2018 to 2023. Among his recent projects at the O’Keeffe Museum are Making a Life\, an exhibition that explores the many ways in which O’Keeffe was a “maker\,” and an exhibition in the museum’s “Contemporary Voices” series that paired paintings by Josephine Halvorson (the museum’s first artist-in-residence) with works by Georgia O’Keeffe. Prior to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum\, he served as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The San Diego Museum of Art. Plotek has contributed an essay on O’Keeffe’s and Moore’s use of found objects entitled “Finding the Form” to the O’Keeffe and Moore exhibition catalogue. \n  \n“Looking Inwards”: The Role of Memory and Association in the Perception of Henry Moore’s Internal/External Forms\nDr. Hannah Higham will soon join the Royal Academy of Art in London as their new Senior Curator\, RA Collections. She leaves her current role as Senior Curator of Collections and Research at the Henry Moore Foundation after seven years in the organization. Previously she has worked for Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery\, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norfolk\, and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham. She has curated numerous exhibitions and published widely on both Henry Moore and the subject of sculpture. SUMMARY:Painting\, Map\, Icon: Visualizing A Nepalese Sacred Journey
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 13\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Dr. Neeraja Poddar\, The Ira Brind and Stacey Spector Associate Curator of South Asian Art at Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and a Research Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies\nVirtual Event \n  \n\n  \nIn the collection of Philadelphia Museum of Art is an exceptional Nepalese painting that depicts pilgrims walking winding paths\, fording fast-flowing rivers\, and climbing steep cliffs as they make their way through the Kathmandu Valley. Their destination—the holy lake of Gosainkund—is at the right end of the painting and pilgrims traverse the work’s fourteen feet\, three and a half inches (4.35 metres) to reach it. On the road they encounter numerous sacred sites that dot the urban centers or stand alone in the landscape. This presentation will explore how the format of the Gosainkund painting lends itself to the creation of a sacred map that unfolds experientially. Rather than focusing on scientific precision\, the artist appears to use the horizontality of the object to plot towns\, rivers\, and mountains in relation to each other as they might be encountered on a journey\, helping locate sacred sites and allows them to use the painting to trace a unique pilgrimage\, choosing the places they want to “visit” en route. By walking along the length of the work and following an individualized route with their eyes. While the viewers are unable to bathe in the purifying waters of the holy lake\, they may accrue religious merit by offering worship at Gosainkund—the remnants of ritual substances sprinkled on the deity represented within the holy lake are still visible\, transforming the painting into an icon and making it a potent stand-in for a physical pilgrimage. \nNeeraja Poddar is The Ira Brind and Stacey Spector Associate Curator of South Asian Art at Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and a Research Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies. She received her Ph.D. in art history and Archaeology from Columbia University\, and was previously curator at The City Palace Museum\, Udaipur. Her area of expertise is illustrated manuscripts and books produced at the royal courts of South Asia from circa 1500-1800. She also studies the painting traditions of Nepal. Dr. Poddar has published on illustrated manuscripts and series of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa; her curatorial projects include Mewar Photographs\, 1857-1947 at The City Palace Museum\, Udaipur\, and Encounters in Exile: From the Ramayana\, The Art of the Book in South Asia\, and the reinstallation of the South Asian galleries at Philadelphia Museum of Art\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 25\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Dr. Janet Baker\, Curator of Asian Art\, Phoenix Art Museum\nVirtual Event \n  \nDiscover the island nation of Sri Lanka\, formerly known as Ceylon\, which lies off the southeast coat of India\, placing it along strategic sea routes of trade between Asia and Europe. Explore the legacy of Ceylon based on surviving artifacts\, Buddhism found a home in Sri Lanka from its place of origin in northwest India around the 5-6th century\, and the faith’s oldest traditions remain intact on the island today. Over the centuries\, various ruling families created a theocracy\, a government of officials who ruled by divine guidance. Beginning in the late 16th century\, the island entered a long period of colonial rule; first colonized by the Portuguese in 1597\, followed by the Dutch in 1640 and the British in 1815. The British largely supported the Buddhist theocracy maintained under the indigenous kings of Kandy\, the last monarchy to rule Ceylon from 1597 to 1815. Ceylon finally achieved independence in 1948\, and a period of insurrection and civil war followed. In 1972\, a constitution and a republic were established\, which led to the naming of a new nation\, Sri Lanka.\n  \nLegacy of Ceylon: Art & Photography of Sri Lanka presents a wide range of works that explore painting and sculpture featuring a distinctive combination of Indian and Southeast Asian artistic styles and iconography. Works from the colonial period are embellished with motifs from Portugal\, Holland\, and Britain. By the 18th century\, the concept of divine kingship had reached its apex. Solid bronze-casting techniques were used to create large-scale works that expressed the elegance and perfection in sculpted form of the enlightened spirit of the Buddha. Many of the works discussed had never been on public view prior to the exhibition of this same title at Phoenix Art Museum in 2021-22. Legacy of Ceylon: Art and Photography of Sri Lanka also features original black-and-white photographs by Dr. Quintus Fernando (1926-2004)\, who explored his native home of Sri Lanka in the 1950s with a Mamiya-flex camera and black-and-white film. His keen eye captured serene and exuberant moments of the island’s people\, landscapes\, Buddhist ruins\, and everyday life\, with a particular focus on the nation’s tropical sea and fertile fields. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 16\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Alessandra Moctezuma\, Gallery Director and Professor of Fine Art at San Diego Mesa College\nVirtual Event \n  \nJoin the virtual Larry Baza Memorial Lecture with Alessandra Moctezuma\, Gallery Director and Professor of Fine Art at San Diego Mesa College\, as she shares about Judith Baca\, a Chicana artist\, pioneer of muralism as community art\, and 2023 recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Baca’s “Great Wall of Los Angeles” spans half a mile of the Tujunga wash in the San Fernando Valley and exists as a visual testimony to the diverse histories and struggles of the people that have made California. \nBaca learned from Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros that art is a radical tool. As painting assistant for the “World Wall” murals\, Alessandra Moctezuma learned from Baca about creating change through art. In 2021\, Moctezuma curated “Memorias de Nuestra Tierra\,” a retrospective of Judith Baca for the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach.  In this talk\, Moctezuma will cover the most salient artworks by Baca and provide personal insights from knowing the artist and her trajectory for three decades. \n  \nSave your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link.
