These islands had an independent political and artistic culture from Japan. This included fine textiles of a unique nature. The most famous of these was Bingata\, a textile decorated through a labor-intensive stenciling process. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 29\n10:30 a.m\nSpeaker: Alejandra Phelts\, Artist\nMuseum Boardroom \n  \nJoin the Latin American Arts Council (LAAC) in exploring the meaningful and innovative art of Alejandra Phelts\, a contemporary Mexican artist\, educator\, and lecturer. Her figurative approach is colorful and tries to achieve spontaneous expression between the classic and urban representations. Phelts pays tribute to all of the women in her life and examines ideals of feminine dignity and strength in motherhood. While current definitions of femininity veer away from the concept of gender\, Phelts celebrates women within the family sphere. \nPhelts studied Philosophy and Art History at the Institute Privé de Philosophie et Théologie Saint Jean in France\, where she developed an inspiration for Italian Renaissance painting and admiration for Fra Angelico. In 2006\, she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from the Autonomous University of Baja California in Tijuana\, Mexico. She has won several awards including First Prize at the 2019 Latin American Art Fair organized by the Athenaeum Art Center. In 2017\, she had an exhibition Retratos Iluminados\, at the Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT). Recently\, Phelts published her retrospective work\, Alejandra Phelts\, La Rumorosa Arte y Patrimonio Colección Literaria\, 2021. She is founder and director of the non-profit association Art Nourishes\, in Tijuana\, Mexico. She has taught many art courses and workshops in Baja California and San Diego. SUMMARY:Rembrandt's Drawings and the Mughal Album
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 12\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Yael Rice\, Associate Professor of the History of Art and Asian Languages & Civilizations\, Amherst College\nVirtual Event \n  \nDuring the 1650s\, the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–69) executed a small number of drawings in ink inspired by Indian paintings on paper. Just how he encountered these materials remains a scholarly debate; what is readily evident is that the Indian paintings which Rembrandt studied had been originally produced on the Indian subcontinent for inclusion in albums. Elites from both the Mughal and Deccani courts patronized the production of albums\, known muraqqa (meaning “patched” in Arabic)\, which are codex assemblages containing choice paintings\, drawings\, calligraphies\, and\, on occasion\, European prints. This talk will consider how and why albums were patronized and\, ultimately\, circulated to Europe a short time after their completion. It will also examine the various ways that Mughal artists had responded to European art many decades before Rembrandt produced his own cross-cultural studies. This presentation will draw upon key findings from the recent 2018 Getty exhibition “Rembrandt and the Inspiration of India” and accompanying catalogue\, to which the speaker was a contributor. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 26\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Meher McArthur\, art historian\nVirtual Event \n  \nTanabe Chikuunsai IV has become renowned worldwide for his large-scale installations woven from thousands of strips of bamboo. Based in Sakai in the Kansai region\, Chikuunsai is the fourth-generation bamboo basket maker of his family and continues their tradition of weaving artistic bamboo baskets and sculptures\, both as an artistic practice and as a means of preserving Japan’s disappearing bamboo forests. As part of the curatorial team who recently worked with him on his current exhibition at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles\, McArthur will discuss his evolution as an artist over the years and share some of his personal philosophy that informs many of his recent installations\, including the current exhibition at JHLA. \nMeher McArthur is an Asian art historian specializing in Japanese art\, with degrees from Cambridge University and London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). She was Curator of East Asian Art at Pacific Asia Museum\, Pasadena\, CA (1998-2006) and for over a decade has curated traveling exhibitions for International Arts & Artists (IA&A)\, most recently Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper (2021-2024). She was Creative Director for the Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden\, Pasadena (2014-2020)\, Academic Curator for Scripps College\, Claremont (2018-2020)\, and Art and Cultural Director for JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles (2020-2022). Her major publications include Gods and Goblins: Folk Paintings from Otsu (PAM\, 1999)\, Reading Buddhist Art (Thames & Hudson\, 2002)\, and The Arts of Asia (Thames & Hudson\, 2005)\, Confucius (Pegasus Books\, 2011)\, Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami (IA&A\, 2012)\, New Expressions in Origami Art (Tuttle\, 2017)\, Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper (IA&A\, 2021)\, and An ABC of What Art Can Be (The Getty Museum\, 2010). \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nPlease save your spot by clicking on this link. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, January 29\n9:30–11:30 a.m. PT\nMuseum galleries \n  \nSold Out\nGuided gentle breathing\, movement\, meditation and sound in the Museum galleries.\nStep into wellness with Yoga Deck instructors inside the Museum galleries. During this special wellness workshop\, be briefly  introduced to relevant works of art in the Museum galleries and then led through a two-hour wellness experience designed by Yoga Deck instructors. \nExplore breathing exercises\, gentle movement poses\, guided meditation\, sound healing\, and personal reflection within the immersive surroundings of the Museum’s art galleries before the Museum opens to the public. This workshop seeks to expand meditative wellness practices through intersecting with the nourishment of art. \n  \nPhysical Disclaimer: \nLimited long-hold gentle poses. Pressure may be put on knees\, hips\, spine\, and shoulders; modifications will be offered.
