SUMMARY:Art Beneath the Surface: High-Tech Detectives Reveal the Secrets of Old Master Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series \nFriday January 19\n10:00 a.m. \n\nSpeakers: Doug Komen and Curtis McConnell\, Founders of Great Masters Art Science and Engineering \nDoug Komen and Curtis McConnell\, founders of Great Masters Art Science and Engineering (greatmastersart.com)\, will introduce the role of science and technology in art authentication\, and how this technology is used to create truly unique and interactive experiences not available at any other museum. Komen and McConnell are colleagues of Maurizio Seracini\, who pioneered the scientific technology and processes that will be featured in the lecture. A diagnostician of Italian art\, Seracini has been well known for his search for the lost Leonardo da Vinci mural\, The Battle of Anghiari in the Salone dei Cinquecento of Palazzo Vecchio\, Florence\, and for his diagnostic survey on Leonardo’s Adoration of the Magi. \nDue to a last minute scheduling conflict\, the original presenter\, Maurizio Seracini\, will be unable to participate. However\, the Museum is happy to announce that his colleagues Doug Komen and Curtis McConnell will be presenting on this topic in his place. \nThis lecture is part of the Guest Lecture & Tour Series\, a monthly series of talks connecting a topic to the permanent collection of the Museum. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. \nSee the full list of speakers for the 2017-18 Guest Lecture and Tour Series. \n\nIndividual Tickets: $13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | $5 students

SUMMARY:The Cosmic Dance of Hindu and Buddhist Deities
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 20\n3:00 p.m. Registration and Reception with Speaker\n3:30 p.m. Lecture \nMore often than the sacred beings of other cultures\, the gods of Hinduism and Buddhism dance. They express their creative and destructive energies through fluid rhythmic movements\, setting the pulse of the universe. In benign moods they dance gracefully in divine play. In stern moods they dance with a force that\, if fully unleashed\, could destroy worlds. Sculpture and paintings depicting deities including Shiva\, Krishna\, and the elephant-headed Ganesha\, together with video clips of dance performances\, will illuminate these ideas. \nThis lecture will be given by Forrest McGill. McGill is the Wattis Senior Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. He has worked for forty years as a museum administrator and a teacher\, curator\, researcher\, and writer in Asian art. Major exhibitions of which he has been organizer or co-organizer include The Rama Epic: Hero\, Heroine\, Ally\, Foe (2016); Gorgeous (2014)\, a joint project with SFMOMA; Emerald Cities: Arts of Siam and Burma\, 1775-1950 (2009)\, A Curious Affair: The Fascination between East and West (2006)\, and The Kingdom of Siam: The Arts of Central Thailand\, 1350-1800 (2005). He served as editor for the catalogs of these exhibitions\, and wrote major essays for them. \nFree for CAIS members | $8 students | $10 members | $12 nonmembers \nHosted by the Committee for the Arts of the Indian Subcontinent \n\nFeatured: The Eternal Dance: Rasamandala (1700-1724) Watercolor from the Edwin Binney 3rd Collection 1990.969

SUMMARY:The Destruction of Memory
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 26\n8:00 p.m. \n\n\nOver the past century\, cultural destruction has wrought catastrophic results for humanity\, and has been steadily increasing. Through meticulous research and compelling interviews\, The Destruction of Memory examines why this has happened\, and how the push to protect\, salvage\, and rebuild has moved in step with the destruction. Based on the book of the same name by Robert Bevan\, this powerful documentary proposes hope: as crimes of cultural destruction are increasingly reported\, perpetrators can be brought to justice and awareness can grow. Filmmaker Tim Slade will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A session following the screening. 2017\, not rated\, 85 minutes. \nShow your film screening ticket for free Museum admission during Art After Hours on Friday\, January 26\, 2018 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. \n$5 members\, students / $7.50 seniors\, military / $10 nonmembers
