DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 17\n10:00 a.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nCornelia Feye\, author and publisher\, will speak on the subject of female artists of the 20th century. \nThe 20th century began with an explosion of new discoveries and artistic styles all over Europe. The trauma of World War I further prompted the development of art forms from Expressionism\, Fauvism\, to Cubism\, Dadaism\, and Surrealism. Women were actively involved in these new approaches to art. This lecture will explore the work of Susanne Valadon\, Paula Moderson-Becker\, Gabriele Münter\, Emily Carr\, Sonia Delaunay\, Georgia O’Keeffe\, Hilma af Klint\, Käthe Kollwitz\, Alice Neel\, Frida Kahlo\, Dorothea Tanning and others. \nAfter her lecture\, Cornelia Feye will be signing her newest book Private Universe inside Bibliotique\, the Museum’s boutique shop (located across the sculpture court from the auditorium). Her book will be available for sale in Bibliotique for $12.00. Members will receive their discount\, as with all purchases! Private Universe is “a coming of age novel about a young woman’s spiritual quest\, combining mystery\, art history\, complex relationships\, world travel\, and the search for meaning. This year\, the Museum will offer free general admission to recognize the arts and the important role that art museums play in their communities. The Museum also invites visitors to share their Art Museum Day experiences via social media\, with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay. \nAAMD’s Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums in North America. The initiative is an extension of the International Council of Museums’s (ICOM) International Museum Day\, a global program embracing all different types of museums. Last year\, the San Diego Museum of Art—along with more than 150 other AAMD member museums of varying sizes across the United States\, Canada\, and Mexico—participated in Art Museum Day. \nA comprehensive list of participating AAMD member art museums will be available on the AAMD website. Note that while AAMD’s Art Museum Day and ICOM’s International Museum Day are formally held each year on May 18\, some institutions\, like the San Diego Museum of Art\, shift their events to adjacent dates.

Ticket holders can expect a notice of refund through email. \n\nOne of the gems in the Edwin Binney 3rd collection at The San Diego Museum of Art is the Bhāgavata Purāna (Ancient Stories of the Lord)\, referred to as the Mysore Manuscript\, dated around 1825. For the first time the manuscript is published with every illustration discussed in detail. The forthcoming book The Great Mysore Bhāgavata by the renowned scholar\, Dr. B.N. Goswamy\, will be a complete study of nearly 200 illustrations. \nDr. B.N.  Goswamy will be in San Diego to unveil this publication. Please join us to celebrate this occasion at the restaurant Royal India. There will be a wine reception prior to the presentation by Dr. B.N Goswamy followed by an Indian dinner.
