SUMMARY:Film Screening: Pollock
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 10\n8:00 p.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nFeaturing an Academy Award–winning turn by Marcia Gay Harden as Lee Krasner\, whose work is featured in the Museum’s current exhibition Abstract Revolution\, Pollock depicts the tumultuous relationship between Krasner and Jackson Pollock as they blazed new paths in Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s. A longtime passion project of first-time director Ed Harris (who stars as Pollock)\, the film does not shy away from depicting the demons that followed the artist throughout his life. Pollock is notable too for its compassionate depiction of Krasner\, whose significant artistic achievements and legacy are to this day overshadowed by her role as Pollock’s wife. 2000\, Rated R\, 122 min. \nShow your film screening ticket for free Museum same-day admission during Art After Hours from 5:00–8:00 p.m. \n$5 members and students | $7.50 seniors and military | $10 nonmembers \nTicket sales for members open Friday\, November 22 at 10:00 a.m. Ticket sales for the public open Friday\, December 6. \n\nJoin us inside the Museum before the film screening for a free Art of Élan Pop Up Concert: Abstract Revolution at 7:00 p.m. in a tribute to the exhibition Abstract Revolution. This concert is free to attend with your film screening ticket or after Museum admission.

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture Series: Artists in Love
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 17\n10:00 a.m. \nDiane Arkin\, Former Senior Lecturer\, National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, presents on the subject of artists in love. \nRomantic influences flourished among artist couples throughout the 20th century and played a fascinating role in furthering new modes of expression. Whether partnering briefly or for extended periods of time\, famous overt and covert lovers exchanged ideas and imagery that triggered some of the most important avant-garde art of the modern era. Join us as we examine the connections between such artist pairs as Pablo Picasso and Fernande Olivier\, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe\, Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock\, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude who drew inspiration from one another\, and whose art took paths unimaginable without the impact of their companions. \nFor fifteen years when V.I.P’s\, dignitaries\, superstars\, and celebrities came to the National Gallery of Art\, Diane Arkin was the Senior Lecturer and scholar routinely called on to provide engaging\, entertaining\, and thought provoking lectures on subjects spanning treasures from the middle ages through the most challenging art of today. Diane continues to lecture nationally and internationally on museum education\, trends in theory and practice\, active learning strategies\, museums as unique learning environments\, and a broad range of art historical topics. Prior to coming to the National Gallery of Art\, Diane served as Curator of Education at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art and Design in Washington\, DC\, and as Director of Education at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. Diane’s work as a Program Coordinator in both the Resident Associate Program and the International Study Tours division of the Smithsonian Institution included years of lecturing both domestically and internationally. Before entering the museum field Diane had an active career as an academic\, serving as Assistant Professor of Art History at George Mason University and at The University of Colorado\, and also teaching extensively throughout the Washington\, D.C. area. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours at 11:30 a.m. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | Free for students (with ID\, available on-site at the event only) \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council \nFeatured: Christo and Jeanne-Claude\, Running Fence\, 1976\, Mixed media\, 1998.99.a-b\, Museum purchase.
