SUMMARY:Modern & Contemporary Art from India: The First Modern Painters--From Amrita Sher-Gil To Bombay Progressives
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 11\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Betty Seid\, independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer \n  \nJoin the South Asian Arts Council for a four-part series on Modern & Contemporary Art from India. The second lecture in the series focuses on The First Modern Painters: From Amrita Sher-Gil To Bombay Progressives. \n\nBegin with Amrita Sher-Gil\, arguably the first professional Modern artist in India\, and then proceed to the mid-century emergence (concurrent with the 1947 Independence of India) of the Progressive Art Group in Bombay. Their presence (and their legacy) is dominated by two founding artists: M. F. Husain and F.N. Souza. We will look closely at the work of these two prolific rebel painters—so different in style\, yet each representing the dynamic creative energy of India’s rebirth as a nation. \n\nBetty Seid is an independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer. She was previously Research Associate and Exhibition Coordinator for South Asian Art in the Department of Asian Art of The Art Institute of Chicago. Her exhibition (and catalog) New Narratives: Contemporary Art from India was the first to show 21st-century Indian art in the United States. \n\n  \n\nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nSave my spot! \nFree for active South Asian Arts Council (renewed for 2021-2022) and SDMA members | $5 for all others \n  \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured: F.N. SUMMARY:John Raymond Mireles: Destroying Photography
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker:  John Raymond Mireles\, Photographer \n  \nAn artist with a conceptual bent\, John Raymond Mireles challenges conventional notions of what photography is—both conceptually and in its physical manifestation. In his current exhibition at the Museum\, Disestablishment: John Raymond Mireles\, he presents large-scale photographs of remote and staggeringly beautiful landscapes that have recently had their US National Monument status revoked\, opening the sites for mining and drilling. Then\, he invites the public to take part in destroying the landscape images\, transforming the exhibition into a visceral experience to deepen understanding of the potential damage facing these virgin landscapes. These destructive actions question complicity by mimicking the fate that awaits these areas. \nJoin us online via Zoom on September 17 as we hear from Mireles about his photographic work that crosses genres: it has ranged from portraiture to still life to landscape to street work to documentary projects. \nThen\, consider being part of the destruction by attending the in-person Public Destruction Event on the Museum steps starting at 2:00 p.m. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \n  \n Featured: John Raymond Mireles\, Toadstools Hoodoos\, Utah; formerly within Escalante National Monument\, 2019 / 2021. SUMMARY:Butterflies on Chinese Art with a Special Focus on Chinese Snuff Bottles
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 30\n1:00–2:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Clare Chu\, Director and Secretary\, International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society \n  \nButterflies are rich in biological diversity; there are over 1\,300 species in China today and many active societies of lepidopterists studying them. This lecture looks at the materials that are used to depict butterflies such as porcelain\, amber\, and lacquerware\, and analyzes the symbolism inherent in the decoration of these pieces. It also examines the “dreaming” story from the philosopher Zhuangzi\, who wrote one of the foundational texts of Chinese literature and philosophy\, also entitled Zhuangzi. Later interpretations of dreams in the Chinese literary tradition drew on this strange and radical story in which Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly but awoke wondering if he was a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi. \nClare Chu has worked in the field of Chinese snuff bottles for almost forty years\, and is the secretary and a director of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society. This year\, Chu became the editor of the Society’s Journal. Chu continues to work as a scholar-dealer\, focusing on the development of collections with their owners\, and as a lecturer and teacher. Chu has curated a number of museum exhibitions of snuff bottles: one in 2016 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and another in 2018 at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. She is currently curating an exhibition of over 750 bottles to be held in late October at the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei\, for which she has written three fully illustrated catalogues. The exhibition is entitled A Courtly Gathering of Qing Treasures: Chinese Snuff Bottles from Taiwanese Collections. Chu is also a published poet\, who often draws upon her knowledge of Asian art for inspiration. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured: Ma Shaoxuan\, Inside-Painted Crystal “Butterflies” Snuff Bottle\, 1895.
