SUMMARY:Modern & Contemporary Art from India: 1970s\, 1980s\, and 1990s--Poetic Realism and New Pictorialism
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 9\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Betty Seid\, independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer \n  \nJoin the South Asian Arts Council for a four-part series on Modern & Contemporary Art from India. The third lecture in the series focuses on 1970s\, 1980s\, and 1990s: Poetic Realism and New Pictorialism. \n\nNarrative art with recognizable subjects was paramount during the 1970s\, 80s and 90s in India. Realism\, which had been briefly sidelined by Abstract art\, re-entered the Indian artists’ vocabulary. A long tradition of figurative art was already in place\, but now the human figure served as vehicle for expression\, often set in a floaty\, non-European perspective space. We will be looking at four representative artists from the late twentieth century who comfortably found a place for Indian-ness in Modern Art:  KG Subramanyan\, Tyeb Mehta\, Gulammohammed Sheikh\, and Bhupen Khakar. \n\nBetty Seid is an independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer. She was previously Research Associate and Exhibition Coordinator for South Asian Art in the Department of Asian Art of The Art Institute of Chicago. Her exhibition (and catalog) New Narratives: Contemporary Art from India was the first to show 21st-century Indian art in the United States. \n\n  \n\nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nSave my spot! \nFree for active South Asian Arts Council (renewed for 2021-2022) and SDMA members | $5 for all others \n  \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured (clockwise from upper left): G. Subramanyan\, The City is Not for Burning\, 1993. | Tyeb Mehta\, Untitled (Two Figures)\, 1981. | Gulammohammed Sheikh\, Speechless City\, 1975. | Bhupen Khakhar\, Injured Head of Raju\, 2001.

SUMMARY:Half the World: Shah Abbas and the Splendors of Isfahan
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 28\n1:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Elaine Pierce\, docent\, The San Diego Museum of Art \n  \nIn the early 17th century\, Isfahan was one of the most modern and beautiful cities in the world\, attracting diplomats and merchants from across Europe and Asia. \nDuring this “Golden Age of Persia\,” Shah Abbas transformed his beleaguered nation-state into a military and mercantile powerhouse—and he did so despite a relative lack of natural resources. As discussed in this talk\, silk and ceramic arts were raised to new levels and served as a major means to regain power and influence. Islamic architecture\, gardens\, and poetry will also be explored. \n  \nSpeaker Elaine Pierce worked as a physician (MD) for over 30 years\, first in primary care and then in public health with the County of San Diego. Apart from being an amateur artist and trying to see the top art museums in the world\, she had no background in art history until she started the SDMA docent training program and fell in love with it\, especially Asian art. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council \nFeatured: Interior image of the Mosque Shaikh Lutf-Allah
