SUMMARY:Art and the Environment: An Artist Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 3\n10:00 a.m.–noon\nVirtual Friends Lecture and Docent Guest Lecture\nSpeakers: Fernando Casasempere\, ceramic artist; Anya Gallaccio\, artist and professor\, Department of Visual Arts at the University of California\, San Diego; Rebeca Méndez\, artist\, designer\, and Chair of the UCLA Design Media Arts department; and John Mireles\, photographic artist\nModerator: MacKenzie Elmer\, environment reporter for Voice of San Diego \n  \nEach artist will share how their artistic practice and work speaks to issues around land\, the environment\, climate change\, and waste. \nUnified in their innovative and exploratory use of materials and subjects\, artists Fernando Casasempere\, Anya Gallaccio\, Rebeca Méndez\, and John Mireles will gather to discuss their individual practices creating works that invite us to explore our relationship with nature and the earth. While employing different media\, these artists reveal the powerful human presence and influence that remains in the objects\, landscapes\, and environments we inhabit. The conversation will be moderated by Voice of San Diego’s Environment Reporter\, MacKenzie Elmer. \n  \nFree for SDMA docents and members at the Friend level and above | $5 suggested donation for all others \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. \nReserve My Spot \n  \nArtist Panelists: \nFernando Casasempere’s ceramic forms are often inspired by the effects of machines and mass production on the environment and modern society\, including a monumental field of ceramic and steel flowers in the courtyard of Somerset House\, called Out of Sync\, which has now been installed in the Atacama Desert of his native Chile. Casasempere’s ceramics are produced using waste from mining and drilling to create vibrant colors and\, as in pre-Columbian art\, his works are unglazed. He currently lives and works in London\, having brought twelve tons of his own clay mixtures from Chile with him. An exhibition of his work\, titled TERRA: Fernando Casasempere will be on view beginning April 29\, 2022\, at The San Diego Museum of Art. \nAnya Gallaccio creates site-specific\, minimalist installations and often works with organic material such as flowers\, fruit\, plants\, sand\, stones\, and ice. Gallaccio’s practice engages us with the dualities of nature and transience versus the fixed and creates a tension between what we believe is beautiful and benign\, and its far more complex existence. Her natural material choice results in real-time processes of transformation and decay\, exploring ideas around memory and the presence of something that is no longer there. Gallaccio was born in Paisley\, Scotland\, and she is a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California\, San Diego. \nRebeca Méndez works with various resources and technologies to invoke new balances between the artificial and the natural\, between humans and nature. Méndez is an artist\, designer\, and Chair of the UCLA Design Media Arts department\, where she is director of the CounterForce Lab\, a research and fieldwork studio dedicated to using art and design to develop creative collaborations\, research\, and projects around the social and ecological impacts of climate change. Méndez’s interests and initiatives are a bridge between art\, design\, and science\, and demonstrate a commitment to a sustainable future. \nJohn Mireles works in the medium of photography\, often inviting the public to participate in additional meaning-making through the hands-on destruction of his artwork. In 2019 he traveled to photograph areas in the United States that had previously been protected but were since opened to drilling and mining\, and exhibited these photographs at The San Diego Museum of Art in 2021 as Disestablishment: John Raymond Mireles. In order to create a visceral understanding of the potential for damage that awaits these environments\, after one month of exhibition\, members of the public were then invited to hammer on\, cut away\, stomp on\, tear\, and mark up the prints. After the works had been damaged\, they were reconstructed and re-hung for continued exhibition. These images and actions pose the question\, “If we are hesitant to damage these prints\, why are we okay with allowing the actual environment to be destroyed by commercial exploitation?” \n  \nModerator: \nMacKenzie Elmer is an environment and energy reporter at Voice of San Diego\, a non-profit investigative journalism newsroom. She obtained a master’s in climate science and policy at Scripps Institution of Oceanography\, where she explored the impact of lithium extraction on indigenous Chilean communities driven by market and political demand for renewable energy in California. She began her journalism career in Iowa after completing a journalism and Spanish bachelors at University of Iowa and covered everything from politics to crime at newsrooms like The Des Moines Register and the Associated Press. \n

SUMMARY:How to decode a manuscript: A close look at a Mughal book of poetry
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 14\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Marika Sardar\, art scholar\nVirtual Event \nIn museum collections with hundreds or thousands of objects\, there are many treasures awaiting a curator’s detailed study. This lecture will introduce audiences to the process of curatorial investigation and publication\, all through the example of a manuscript from the Aga Khan Museum that was made at the Mughal court in the early 17th century. With calligraphy by the famous scribe Abd al-Rahim al-Haravi (known as “Amber Pen”) and paintings by some of the top artists in the employ of Emperor Jahangir\, this manuscript appeared to offer rich material for study. Further research then uncovered many unusual features that added to its intrigue\, providing a good example of how a manuscript is studied\, from dealing with centuries of changes to the physical object\, to thinking about the text and its arrangement\, and the selection of subjects for painting. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. SUMMARY:The World Before Racism: An Art Story

Boseman College of Fine Arts\, Howard University\nVirtual Event \n  \nThis presentation examines\, through art from ancient Greece to the 20th century\, the phenomenon of racism; and it answers the questions: Has the time-worn antagonism between black and white always existed? And if not\, who invented it? And when? As “primary sources” (original creations that have not been altered)\, works of art actually have the capacity to answer these questions once and for all and to change the way the world sees race. \n~ Lisa Farrington\, Ph.D. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Archetypes\, Aesthetics\, and Agency: Adat Textiles of Early Indonesian Cultures
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 26\n1:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker:  Thomas Murray\, Asian\, tribal\, and textile art researcher\, collector\, lecturer and private dealer\nVirtual Event \n  \nIndonesian textiles are known to convey messages across time and space by means of an archetypal iconography that include human figures\, trees\, boats\, reptiles\, birds\, and geometric patterns. These encoded images follow ancestral traditions and customary laws known as adat: cloth becomes sacred through a combination of fine spinning\, dying\, and weaving that creates a sense of aesthetic wonder. The anthropologist Alfred Gell referred to this state of mind as the “Technology of Enchantment”:  The better the weaver’s technique\, the greater the cloth’s aesthetic beauty and the more “agency” of spiritual power within an indigenous cultural context. Although those outside the culture cannot decipher those archetypes in terms of the mindset of the weaver’s community\, Gell expresses that the cloths nonetheless convey messages that are powerful\, visually compelling\, and meaningful to outsiders\, though not the same meaning as in the textile’s original context. \nThis lecture will follow the themes presented in the newly published book\, Textiles of Indonesia\, and will focus on some of the finest cloths to come out of the archipelago\, presenting each object with impeccable photographs. Geographically arranged\, this lecture pays particular attention to textiles from the Batak and the Lampung region of Sumatra\, the Dayak of Borneo\, and the Toraja of Sulawesi\, as well as rare textiles from Sumba\, Timor and other islands. \nThomas Murray is a California-based independent researcher\, collector\, lecturer\, and private dealer of Asian\, tribal\, and textile art with an emphasis on antique Indonesian sculpture and textiles and Indian printed trade cloths from the 13th to 18th centuries\, as well as animistic art from other varied cultures. A contributing editor to HALI Magazine for more than thirty years\, he serves as its in-house consultant on ethnographic textiles and has more than fifty publications to his name\, including numerous articles on tribal art and textiles\, as well as eight books and catalogues: Indonesian Tribal Art (2001)\, Animistic Art of Island Asia (2008)\, Masks of Fabled Lands (2009)\, Pairs\, Couples and Maternity: The Art of Two (2014)\, C-14 Dating of Dayak Art (2015)\, Textiles of Japan (2018)\,  Rarities – From the Himalayas to Hawaii (2019) and Textiles of Indonesia (2021). He is past president of the Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association (ATADA) and served a three-year term as a member of US President Barack Obama’s Cultural Property Advisory Committee at the Department of State in Washington\, DC. Thomas Murray currently serves as the president of SF Tribal\, an organization of San Francisco Bay Area art dealers. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nPlease register by clicking on this link.
