SUMMARY:Layered Traditions: Exhibiting South Asia in a Gallery of the Islamic World
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 11\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art\, The San Diego Museum of Art\nVirtual Event \n  \nThis talk will explore The British Museum’s reconceived display of South Asian Islamic art and material culture in The Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World inaugurated in 2018 from a curatorial perspective. \nFollowing a brief illustrated overview of the gallery and its conceptual structure\, which shows a transformation from the previous 30-year installation to a complete reconception of Islamic art and material culture\, it will focus on the representation of South Asia within this context and the thinking behind the selections of works ultimately put on display. \nThe talk will end with examples of South Asian arts of the book included in the installation and emphasize the conservation considerations that led to display decisions for important works such as the Museum’s Hamzanama folios\, ultimately presenting parallels to The San Diego Museum of Art’s own renowned Edwin Binney 3rd Collection of South Asian paintings. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nSave my spot! \nFree for active South Asian Arts Council (renewed for 2021-2022) and SDMA members | $10 for all others \n  \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured: A Sudden flight is reported: Umar and Landhaur converse outside Hamza’s tent. SUMMARY:Art in the Public Realm
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Gail Goldman\, Public Art Activist and Consultant\nVirtual Event \n  \nArtists working in the public realm can accomplish far more than placing a beautiful artwork on a pedestal or in a plaza. Their work can transform space\, heighten our awareness\, stimulate human interaction\, and help define community. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world—the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are. This lecture will explore trends in public art over the years including architecturally integrated art\, environmental art\, digital new media\, and interactive art\, among others. \n  \nThis lecture celebrates the legacy of Larry Baza\, whose passion\, commitment\, and advocacy for the arts made San Diego a better place. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \n  \nFeatured: Beverly Penn\, Global Proportion\, 2019.
