SUMMARY:A (Personal) Jaunt through Northwestern Indian Textiles
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 16\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Ravinder Reddy\nVirtual Event \nIndia has an astounding variety of textiles reflecting a continuous tradition of craftsmanship and trade that spans millennia. Then there are regional centers that have created their own unique techniques and motifs. This presentation will showcase a small aspect of the vast panorama that is Indian textiles. \nIn 2018 event speaker Ravinder Reddy visited Northwest India on a tour that focused on textiles of the region\, specifically Rajasthan and Gujarat. Gujarat is probably the most important center of textiles in India\, and at one time the largest exporter of cotton fabric. Rajasthan is one of the most colorful regions as it relates to textiles. In this presentation we will briefly explore the importance of Northwest India in the story of textiles; look at some regional textiles such as bandhani (tie-dyeing)\, block printing\, and shisha (mirror-work); and finish with showing some textiles that were acquired on this trip. \nDr. Ravinder Reddy\, MD\, is a psychiatrist\, author\, and teacher. He has been deeply interested in many aspects of Indian art. Over the course of five decades\, his focus has included Kushan numismatics\, medieval Shiva sculpture\, early maps depicting the Indian subcontinent\, arms and armour of the region and Hindu iconography. Currently he is exploring textiles of the region. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nSave my spot! \nFree for active South Asian Arts Council (renewed for 2021-2022) and SDMA members | $10 for all others \n  \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council.
